TifraHello everyone, I am planning to convert an Ikea Besta shelving unit into a wine rack and am looking for specific recommendations on reinforcements to ensure the shelves can safely support the weight of wine bottles. The BESTA system is originally designed for media and decorative purposes, but since I find the dimensions ideal, I want to use it. Each compartment is intended to hold about 6-8 bottles, which I estimate to be a load of roughly 12-15 kg (26-33 lbs) per shelf. I am particularly interested in how to reinforce the back panel and shelves, whether additional bracing is advisable, and which materials or fasteners are best suited to ensure long-term stability. Has anyone had experience with strengthening measures or modifications, especially regarding the original Ikea BESTA materials? Thanks in advance for your help!

I am particularly interested in how I should reinforce the back panel and shelves, whether additional braces are advisable, and which materials or screw connections are best suited to ensure long-term stability.I am familiar with the issue of the BESTA shelving unit, having experimented with similar setups myself. The load for wine racks is often underestimated. It is crucial to reinforce the back panel because many BESTA models use only thin particleboard for the backing, which can warp otherwise. For example, I screwed 6 mm (1/4 inch) MDF panels behind the original backing and added diagonally screwed battens for extra support.
The shelves are also made of particleboard and are often vulnerable due to weight, especially if they are longer than 60 cm (24 inches). You can either use stronger shelves (MDF or plywood with at least 18 mm (3/4 inch) thickness) or install a central support such as a vertical batten or a slim metal profile.
For screws, I recommend wood screws with pre-drilled pilot holes, and for added stability, metal brackets at the joints can be used.
Initially, I was concerned about long-term load-bearing capacity, but with these reinforcements, the shelving unit, fully loaded with wine bottles, remained stable for several years. Just make sure not to overload the compartments too much, as excessive weight will still cause the wood to bend.

Load capacity for wine racks is often underestimated. That gets to the heart of the matter. As a structured approach, I recommend the following for converting the Ikea BESTA into a wine rack:
- Reinforce shelves: The original shelves are usually 16 mm (5/8 inch) particleboard, which is borderline for wine bottles weighing 12-15 kg (26-33 lbs) per compartment. Replacing them with plywood shelves at least 18 mm (3/4 inch) thick can be beneficial.
- Center supports: A vertical center support in wider compartments (over 60 cm (24 inches)) prevents sagging.
- Back panel reinforcement: The BESTA’s back panel is made of thin particleboard, which alone is insufficient for stabilization. Adding 6 mm (1/4 inch) MDF panels mounted on the back is recommended to stiffen the box frame.
- Screwing: Use wood screws at least 4 mm (5/32 inch) in diameter with pre-drilling to avoid damaging the material. Small metal brackets at corner joints are also helpful.
These measures have proven effective in practice and ensure long-term stability under moderate loads. The weight of the wine bottles should be distributed over as many support points as possible to avoid point loads.

A vertical central support in wider spans (over 60cm (24 inches)) prevents sagging.I can fully confirm this tip.
I also have a note regarding anchoring in the room: If your BESTA shelf is taller than 1 meter (3.3 feet) and positioned against a wall, you should definitely secure it to the wall as well. This prevents tipping under load and improves overall stability.
Additionally, I would recommend rounding the edges of the shelves on site slightly, so that bottles sit more securely and don’t shift as easily.
Which screws or brackets you use exactly depends on the mounting situation. I have mostly used 30mm (1.2 inch) long screws for brackets, which were sturdy enough.

For reinforcing the shelves: I recommend 18 mm (3/4 inch) plywood, as it tends to warp less than particleboard. Additionally, for a wine rack, especially with glass bottles, it makes sense to pay attention to the quality of the shelves.
For the back panel, a 6 mm (1/4 inch) MDF board is optimal. I mounted it using small, flat-head screws to avoid unevenness.
For screw connections, you can also use countersunk screws to keep the surface smooth and visually appealing. Steel brackets provide good connection stability.
During assembly, I would focus on precise angles to ensure the weight is distributed ideally and to prevent shear forces on individual points.
