Hello everyone,

I am looking for a good way to childproof the doors of my Ikea Besta cabinet, but I want to avoid visible locking mechanisms or large external latches. I’m looking for something that ensures safety without affecting the clean look of the doors or attaching noticeable locks on the outside.

My children are quite curious and like to open doors, so the solution should be reliable, easy to install, and leave no major marks in case I want to change it later.

Does anyone here have experience or tips on how to implement this specifically? I imagine that built-in magnetic or push-to-open locks might work, but I’m uncertain about the installation or operation with Besta doors.

Any ideas or products you have tested that are effective, discreet, and child-friendly are very welcome. Thanks in advance!

Installing magnetic child safety locks on the inside is often the best solution. These are barely visible and effectively prevent children from opening cabinets. Simply attach the magnet on the inside, which triggers the key electromagnetically.

Alternatively, there are also push-to-close catches that fit perfectly with the Besta design and are mounted inside.

To make Ikea Besta doors childproof without visible locking mechanisms, I recommend the following approach:

- Use internal magnetic child safety locks that can be installed concealed and opened with a special magnetic key.
- These systems do not affect the external design or the function of the doors.
- Optionally, push-button catches can be installed on the inside of the doors, which are difficult for children with less strength to open.

Proper positioning is crucial to ensure reliable locking. Before installation, check whether the door thickness and the gap to the cabinet body are compatible with the chosen safety locks.

Personally, I have had good experiences with the brand "Magnet Lock." These are discreet and sturdy. Another option is Ikea’s own child safety solution, which, however, is partly visible.

Thanks, that definitely helps!

Could you briefly explain how the installation of the Besta doors works? I mean, do you need to remove the doors or significantly modify the cabinet frame? And how is the daily operation— is the magnetic key difficult to handle?

Are there any alternatives that function more like an "invisible snap fastener"? I will check if there is enough space inside and that no hinges get in the way.

Hello sanfa0,

I am currently reviewing your request and would like to provide you with a simple step-by-step guide on how to make Ikea Besta doors childproof without visible locking mechanisms:

- Remove the door: To install internal magnetic locks, it is best to remove the doors first, as this allows for more precise installation.
- Choose the right child lock: Make sure the model is designed for hinged doors and fits the thickness of the Besta doors.
- Test positioning: Attach the lock temporarily with tape before final installation to ensure the mechanism fits correctly and the door closes securely.
- Installation: Secure with screws, paying close attention to exact alignment.
- Magnetic key: Usually, a small magnetic wand is used to open the lock from the outside. This is very easy to use while preventing accidental opening.

One tip: For push-locks on the inside, make sure they are sturdy enough but not too tight, so that the doors can still be easily opened in daily use.

I hope this helps clarify things.

You can simply take the doors off the hinges to install the magnetic lock. No modifications to the frame are necessary.

The magnetic key is very easy to use—you just hold it up to the door, and the locked mechanism responds immediately, allowing the door to open. It’s practical for adults, keeps the doors childproof, but isn’t unnecessarily complicated.

If you prefer a solution with less technical effort, a push latch mounted inside could be an alternative. These are discreet and relatively easy to install but require more force to open.
