Hello everyone,

I recently bought some Billy bookshelves from IKEA and have noticed that they collect dust and dirt quite quickly in everyday use. This is not too surprising, especially with open shelves. However, I would like to know specifically: How can I better protect BILLY shelves from dust and dirt without affecting their appearance or ease of use? Are there any proven methods, protective films, special cleaners, or perhaps technical solutions like covers that can be opened quickly?

I would prefer not to have to dust the shelves constantly but also don’t want to spend too much money or effort. Maybe someone here has personal experience or professional tips on how to reduce cleaning or improve long-term protection. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Basically, BILLY shelves are prone to dust due to their open design. A simple and very effective solution is to install glass doors, which IKEA offers as accessories. These prevent dust from settling directly on the shelves while keeping the interior visible without affecting the overall appearance.

In addition to physical barriers, I recommend regularly cleaning the shelves with a microfiber cloth, as this absorbs dust better. For surface protection, water-based furniture care products can also be used, which create a slightly dirt-repellent layer. However, it is important not to use silicone-containing products, as these can damage the surface over time.

In short: glass doors combined with regular cleaning using suitable products provide the best protection against dust and dirt.

Simply install glass doors to keep dust out. Alternatively, use shelves covered with protective film and wipe regularly.

Very interesting topic! To effectively protect BILLY shelves from dust and dirt, it’s important to carefully consider the existing shelf construction. If you want to keep the open compartments, you can use so-called “dust protection panels” or display cabinet doors, which are available from IKEA or third-party suppliers – they are often easy to install and can also be screwed on afterward.

Alternatively, transparent protective films can be applied to the shelves. These films are usually self-adhesive and prevent dust from settling into the pores of the wood or particleboard. However, it is important to choose high-quality, breathable films to avoid moisture buildup, which can otherwise cause damage.

For cleaning, I would recommend the following steps:
1. Regularly wiping with a slightly damp microfiber cloth
2. Using antistatic sprays that do not attract dust
3. If glass doors are present, cleaning them regularly as well

A small tip: The placement of the shelves matters – try to avoid positioning them directly under ventilation vents or near windows where drafts increase dust accumulation.

One final question for you: Do you mainly use the shelves as open display space, or do you have lockable or closed sections in your furniture?

That would be important to know in order to provide more tailored advice.

Good question! I mainly use the shelves open because they are meant to hold books and decorations that should remain visible. At first, I didn’t consider glass doors because I didn’t want to lose the open feel. However, the idea of glass doors makes sense as long as they aren’t too dominant.

What exactly do you mean by “anti-static sprays”? Are they suitable for wood, and do they not damage the surface? I’ve also heard that dust is attracted by static electricity, so that might really be a solution. Which products or brands would you recommend?

The shelves are located near a window front, which is probably not ideal. Choosing a different location is unfortunately difficult.

I would appreciate more advice, including on protective films – how can these be removed again without leaving any residue?

Hello ECESIN,

I’m happy to explain this in more detail. Antistatic sprays designed specifically for furniture or plastics reduce static electricity that attracts dust. It’s important to choose a product that is explicitly labeled "for wood" or "for furniture surfaces," as other ingredients can damage the paint or coating.

Here is a brief recommended procedure:

1. First, thoroughly clean the shelf with a damp, soft cloth to remove any existing dust.
2. Then apply a thin layer of antistatic furniture spray, preferably onto a microfiber cloth, and then onto the shelves—do not spray directly onto the wood.
3. After about 30 minutes of drying time, the surface will attract less dust.

Regarding protective films: Self-adhesive films can help but should be breathable to avoid trapping moisture. Depending on the film quality, they can usually be carefully removed with some heat (e.g., a hairdryer) without leaving residue. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions.

My tip: Test the spray and film first on an inconspicuous area.
