Hello everyone,
I recently bought some Billy bookshelves from IKEA and have noticed that they collect dust and dirt quite quickly in everyday use. This is not too surprising, especially with open shelves. However, I would like to know specifically: How can I better protect BILLY shelves from dust and dirt without affecting their appearance or ease of use? Are there any proven methods, protective films, special cleaners, or perhaps technical solutions like covers that can be opened quickly?
I would prefer not to have to dust the shelves constantly but also don’t want to spend too much money or effort. Maybe someone here has personal experience or professional tips on how to reduce cleaning or improve long-term protection. Thanks in advance!

Glass doors plus regular cleaning with suitable products provide the best protection against dust and dirt.Sure, glass doors are practical, but that takes away what makes the BILLY shelf popular—flexibility and quick access.
Also, it’s important to realize that dust can never be completely prevented. You could theoretically seal the shelf completely or put it into a glass cabinet—but who wants that?
My view is: instead of constantly fighting dust, it’s better to focus on practical cleaning—such as using a vacuum cleaner attachment that doesn’t scratch. Those who think protective films really help might be disappointed, as dust particles often stick unpleasantly to them.
If in doubt, you just have to accept the BILLY philosophy: lightweight, affordable, and open, but prone to dust. Technical solutions quickly become more expensive and complicated.
Hello! I find the tips here really helpful!
At my home, I retrofitted BILLY shelves with glass doors, and it’s really great! No more dust on the books, yet you can still see everything through the doors.
I’ve also made it a habit to quickly wipe them down with a microfiber cloth once a week. It’s hardly any effort and keeps the shelves perfectly clean.
Small investment, big effect! 🙂
One more thing: if you want to keep the open shelves, you can also use scented candles or air purifiers, which help reduce the amount of dust I have – sounds strange, but I really notice the difference!
Good luck to you, your shelf will definitely rock :-)

Glass doors are definitely the most effective against dust.
If you leave the shelves open, you can also use furniture covers made of lightweight fabric that can be removed easily. They protect against dust but don’t look as sterile as plastic sheets.
Otherwise, frequent wiping and humidity often reduce dust buildup. However, the surface should not be made too wet.
