I am planning to furnish my small kitchen using the Ikea Metod system but am facing some challenges due to the limited space. My kitchen is about 6 square meters (65 square feet), rectangular in shape, with a lower ceiling height of 2.25 m (7 ft 5 in), which needs to be taken into account when planning the cabinets and storage solutions.

My question is quite specific: How can I most effectively use the Ikea Metod system in a small kitchen with limited space and a low ceiling? I am especially interested in tips and tricks for selecting base cabinets, wall cabinets, and custom storage solutions to maximize the countertop area while still providing enough storage.

What combinations of cabinet fronts, interior fittings, and, for example, additional shelves or attachments have worked well for you? Thank you in advance for your ideas and experiences!

A very well-thought-out topic! For small kitchens, it is advisable to limit the Metod system to a few but optimally usable modules. Especially in combination with limited space and low ceiling height, I recommend the following approach:

- Plan base cabinets with a maximum height of 80 cm (31.5 inches) to maintain a comfortable working height.
- Prefer pull-out cabinets instead of hinged doors, as they make better use of storage space and improve accessibility.
- For the walls, wall cabinets with a depth of 20 or 35 cm (8 or 14 inches), depending on the available space, are suitable to avoid overwhelming the kitchen layout.
- Using corner solutions such as turntables can make excellent use of corner space.
- Interior fittings like cutlery inserts and adjustable shelves increase flexibility and organization.

The combination of shallower wall cabinets and fully extendable base cabinets provides ample storage without taking up too much volume in the room. It should also be noted that ceiling height is often too low for tall wall cabinets, so combined cabinet sizes or open shelving can be used as alternatives.

To further develop the planning, here are some well-founded facts and proven solutions for using Ikea Metod in small kitchens with low ceiling height:

- The maximum system height for Metod wall cabinets is usually 40 or 60 cm (16 or 24 inches), which fits well with a ceiling height of 2.25 m (7 ft 5 in). Especially 40 cm (16 inches) wall cabinets or combinations of 20 + 40 cm (8 + 16 inches) (open shelves plus small cabinets) create a sense of space and use the height efficiently.

- Appliances and cooktops should preferably be installed at base cabinet height to avoid unnecessary barriers.

- The maximum height for base cabinets (including countertop) is 91 cm (36 inches). A practical setup is 80 cm (31 inches) base cabinet height plus 11 cm (4 inches) countertop.

- For storage space, I recommend depths of 60 cm (24 inches), but without rear toe kicks to optimize height and depth.

- Since storage is limited in small kitchens, using multi-layer pull-outs and internal organizers within the Metod system is essential.

- For corners, the use of Le-Mans baskets or carousel shelves is advised, as these utilize corner space much better than standard shelves.

This exactly influences usability significantly.

Wow, the Metod system offers so many great options, especially for small kitchens! 😊 I used to have a tiny kitchen (5.5 sqm (59 sq ft)) and gained some experience that I definitely want to share:

- Combining open shelves with wall cabinets gives the kitchen a lot of airiness and makes the space feel more open. For example, I installed wall cabinets only on the left wall and used a long open shelf on the right for spices and decorations.
- The interior fittings with pull-outs are really cool because you can organize everything perfectly, and nothing gets hidden behind other items anymore.
- I absolutely fell in love with the narrow 20 cm (8 inch) cabinets – perfect for oils, spices, or small kitchen tools!
- A small countertop with an extendable board is also great when you need extra workspace.

I totally agree! And during installation: pay attention to the height clearances. Sometimes it feels tight, but with good planning, it’s a dream! Don’t get discouraged – a small kitchen is an exciting challenge!

In brief:

- Use pull-out cabinets instead of doors.
- Small, shallow wall cabinets provide storage without compromising the sense of space.
- Corner solutions (swivel or carousel baskets) are essential.
- Customize interior fittings from Ikea precisely, for example, for pots and lids.
- Double storage capacity by adding shelving units instead of just wall cabinets.

This way, you make the most out of a small kitchen.
