I recently purchased some Ikea PLATSA furniture and plan to use it in my kitchen area, where the risk of water splashes and higher humidity is relatively high. Since the PLATSA series is made of coated wood-based materials, I would like to know: What is the best way to protect Ikea PLATSA furniture from water damage? Are there any special sealants or treatment methods that have proven effective? I am also open to tips on proper installation or placement in the room to minimize moisture damage. I am particularly interested in practical measures that offer long-term protection, as replacing the furniture would be quite inconvenient for me. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

I can fully understand why water protection is important to you when it comes to PLATSA furniture—you certainly don’t want your nice furniture to swell or develop unsightly stains over time.

From my own experience, I would definitely recommend treating all edges and especially the backs of the furniture pieces additionally, if possible.

I used a clear wood preservative that is water-repellent and applied another thin coat of it to the furniture after assembly. This provides a good protective layer without significantly changing the look of the interior. In addition, I made sure to keep the furniture a little distance away from direct sources of water, such as sinks or areas with steam.

Sometimes it also helps to place moisture absorbers or small silica gel packets inside the furniture. I’m not sure if anyone here has ever tried that?

I hope some of these ideas are helpful to you. They made a difference for me, but I know that wood-based materials are never completely safe when water is involved.

Regarding how to best protect Ikea PLATSA furniture from water damage, it should be noted that the furniture is made of particleboard with a melamine coating. This coating provides basic protection against moisture; however, edges and back panels are particularly vulnerable.

The following measures have proven effective in practice:
- Sealing cut edges with wood glue or clear varnish to prevent capillary water absorption.
- Using water-repellent varnishes or specialized sealants designed for furniture.
- Installing baseboards or legs so the furniture does not sit directly on the floor, thereby minimizing moisture from the ground.
- Placing the furniture away from direct water sources to avoid splash water.

I am not aware of any specialized sealants provided by Ikea specifically for PLATSA. The use of commercially available wood care products is recommended, provided compatibility with melamine coatings is ensured. Regular inspection and maintenance are important when wear or damage to the surface becomes visible.

Regular use of silica gel packets or other moisture absorbers is possible but does not replace a physical barrier against water.

In summary: a combination of physical protection, sealing of cut edges, and appropriate placement is advisable.

I would like to add that with PLATSA furniture, the edges and especially the back panels are often overlooked, even though they pose the greatest risk for water damage.

This is a very important tip. Especially in humid kitchens or bathrooms, the edges should be treated carefully. Additionally, I recommend, if possible, raising the furniture slightly off the floor. This prevents direct contact with the floor in case of any moisture.

It can also help to regularly inspect the furniture after installation and repair small damages immediately, as moisture can spread quickly otherwise.

For those who are not very experienced with DIY, water-resistant films or covers are also an option to protect the furniture fronts or surfaces from splashes without having to alter them permanently.

If anyone plans to use the furniture in particularly humid environments, I also recommend keeping the room’s humidity as low as possible, for example with air conditioning units or well-functioning ventilation.
