Hello everyone, some time ago I bought the IKEA Malm bed and overall I’m quite satisfied. However, I’m having some concerns about attaching the bed legs. The screws don’t seem to hold firmly, which is especially noticeable when moving the bed – the legs wobble slightly and it lacks a feeling of sturdiness. My specific question is: how can I secure the Malm bed legs more firmly so they hold safely and permanently? Are there any special techniques or tools that can be used to better fix the screws without damaging the bed frame or the material? I appreciate your expertise and tips, and if anyone has experience with this model, please share! Many thanks in advance.

The issue with Malm bed legs often stems from the combination of soft wood and relatively small screws. To ensure the legs sit more securely, it is recommended to first reinforce the screw holes with wooden dowels or to apply a small amount of wood glue to improve grip. Sometimes, using screws with a larger diameter can help – however, it is important to make sure the thread length remains appropriate. Another tip: using threadlocker (e.g., threadlocking adhesive) can prevent the screws from loosening over time. It is crucial not to use excessive force to avoid damaging the material.

Hello Sartill, I have a method that I would like to explain to you in several steps:

1. First, carefully inspect all old screws and inserts. If they are damaged, replace them with higher quality ones, ideally of similar length and slightly larger diameter, as KIN42 suggested.

2. To reinforce the fastening holes, wooden dowels are suitable, or if the holes are slightly worn out, short wood chips combined with wood glue can be used to narrow the hole again.

3. After that, it is recommended to use higher quality washers under the screw heads to increase pressure distribution and better spread the load.

4. For very soft wood, small metal brackets can also be added, attached to the bed frame and the foot support, to provide additional stability.

5. Finally, apply threadlocker to the screws to prevent them from loosening.

Please note common mistakes such as overtightening the screws or tightening them too quickly, as this can weaken the material. This way, you can achieve a significantly more stable fastening.

Thanks for the detailed answers so far! What still confuses me a bit: could I use so-called Spax screws instead of the original screws? They are a bit coarser and have deeper grip, but I wonder if they might damage the wood of the bed frame. Also, is it advisable to fill the screw holes first with wood glue, or would it be better to use wooden dowels? I have rather little experience with DIY furniture work and don’t want to take any risks.

Spax screws can indeed help increase holding strength because they often have a deep and aggressive thread. However, when working with finished furniture like the Malm bed, caution is advised since the wood is relatively thin, and using screws that are too large can cause splitting or cracking.

In general, I recommend repairing the screw holes before changing the screws by using appropriate wooden dowels or wood glue combined with wood shavings. This approach stabilizes the material and provides a reliable base. Only after the hole is stable again should you use screws with a larger diameter – but usually not excessively coarse or too long screws.

Any modifications should therefore be carried out carefully and with some craftsmanship sensitivity.

It’s good that you’re thinking about stability—I know that well. I once had the problem of loose bed legs as well, which was sometimes uncomfortable, especially at night. For me, reinforcing with small metal brackets made a big difference because the mounting plates were simply connected more securely to the side panels. Of course, you should adjust the screws accordingly.

Besides the technical aspects, it’s also important not to overdo it—so don’t overtighten or work the wood too much, otherwise the bed could become unstable in other areas. 🙂
