ᐅ How can I adjust Ikea Metod cabinet doors myself to ensure they close flush?

I noticed that the doors of my Ikea Metod kitchen don’t close completely flush. By this, I mean that the doors are often slightly misaligned with the frame or cannot be perfectly adjusted in height. I assume the hinge adjustment plays a role here, but I’m not sure how to correctly fine-tune the Metod doors so that they close cleanly and flush without rubbing against each other or the frame.

Does anyone know the step-by-step process for optimally adjusting all hinge axes on the Ikea Metod doors? Are there common mistakes to avoid? I would appreciate tips or a detailed explanation so I can fix it myself.

If the height misalignment is especially noticeable, you should specifically check the height adjustment of the hinges. Most Metod hinges have a vertical adjustment on the mounting plate, allowing you to raise or lower the door smoothly.

Here’s how to proceed:
- Loosen the screws on the hinge plate slightly without fully removing them.
- Gently push the door up or down to achieve the correct height.
- Tighten the screws again and check if the door now aligns evenly with the other doors.

If several doors meet each other, it can also help to adjust them sideways using the lateral screw, so all edges line up neatly.

The hinges are designed so that all doors can be adjusted within minutes after installation, but depending on the installation and wall conditions, small deviations may occur.

Have you already checked whether all hinges are firmly secured?

I would like to share a brief step-by-step guide for adjusting Ikea Metod doors that has proven effective:

1. Check that the doors are fully hung. The hinge must be securely seated in the mounting plate.
2. Verify that all screws on the hinge and mounting plate are tightened firmly.
3. Start with the height adjustment: slightly loosen the screws, move the door up or down, then secure the screws again.
4. The side adjustment is made via the screw on the side of the mounting plate. This allows you to align the doors laterally and reduce gaps.
5. Depth is adjusted using a small screw on the side of the door, so the door sits flush.
6. After each adjustment, test the closing action to check for any rubbing or uneven gaps.

Typical mistakes include overtightening the hinges or rushing the adjustment process. Always turn screws in small increments.

This is how I have handled multiple Metod kitchens without any issues.

This is a very important point. A loose hinge can ruin all adjustment efforts.

What I also recommend is tightening the screws evenly with a suitable Phillips screwdriver so that the force is distributed evenly.

If your doors close very unevenly, also check if the cabinet boxes themselves are warped or if any unevenness occurred during installation. This can affect how the doors fit and cannot always be compensated for by adjusting the hinges alone.
