Hello everyone, I recently installed an IKEA Metod kitchen and am now facing the challenge of mounting the doors in a child-friendly and safe way. My main concern is that the doors are securely attached to withstand small children who might pull on them or bump into them, while at the same time avoiding hazards such as finger pinching or the doors unintentionally swinging open. Does anyone have experience with which installation methods, additional safety devices, or perhaps special hinges are recommended? I am especially interested in advice on retrofitting safety features without significantly altering the appearance or restricting the function. Thanks for your help!

I find the idea of magnetic locks quite promising – how discreet are they, and how complex is their installation? Is that really necessary? I believe children learn more by overcoming such obstacles rather than having everything completely sealed off. Besides, these locks usually become annoying after a few months, and often cause damage to the furniture. Maybe it’s better to invest in education and setting clear boundaries instead of maximum security.

My little one is very fast and curious – so just explaining things isn’t always enough. That’s why I chose soft-close hinges and magnetic locks. Installing them was easier than expected and gives a good sense of security.
I feel the same way—I want to protect my young children as effectively as possible without having to cover the entire apartment with inaccessible cabinet doors. I can only recommend not installing too many safety devices at once, so the children don’t get frustrated or handle them clumsily.
That’s true; they are barely noticeable and don’t interfere with adults in daily life. Soft-close hinges are also a real advantage because loud slamming often causes fear or injury.
Do you have any experience with installation difficulties due to the thin cabinet walls of the Metod system?

Do you have any experience with whether there are issues during installation due to the thin cabinet walls of the Metod systems?Yes, definitely. Metod panels are usually only 16 mm (5/8 inches) thick, often with a melamine coating. This means:
- Screws should be used with special anchors or reinforcements
- Drill holes carefully marked to avoid material splitting
- Installation instructions must be followed precisely, especially when using additional brackets
Extra reinforcements should be easy to install with minimal effort to avoid weakening the material. For magnetic locks, it is often sufficient to attach them inside the door frame by gluing or screwing without affecting the load-bearing material.
I really like the discussion! Especially with practical things like kitchen doors in households with children, people often do either too much or too little.
My advice: Stay relaxed if you have soft-close hinges installed – they protect not only your nerves but also your fingers! 😄 And with magnetic child safety locks, you can handle it discreetly. I’ve had good experiences myself with two little troublemakers.
A little bonus: Door dampers are also available separately and can often be retrofitted if you don’t want to replace the doors. They make the whole setup smoother and even safer.
Don’t underestimate this: Even though kids like to test everything, a bit of effort pays off in the long run. But of course, don’t forget to educate them!
