Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to use IKEA Platsa furniture in my rental apartment, but I have some concerns about how to adapt it in a way that is tenant-friendly. I find the PLATSA series very flexible, but since I do not want to drill or mount anything permanently, I am wondering what practical adjustments or tricks exist to make the furniture stable while still being suitable for a rental property. Are there proven methods to optimize the space without having to completely dismantle everything when moving out? I am especially interested in ideas that avoid damage to the walls while still allowing for a personalized look. Who has experience using PLATSA in rental apartments? Thanks in advance for your advice!

My question to you is: What kind of wall surface do you have exactly? Rough plaster, smooth wall, wallpaper?

Thank you for the detailed answer. My walls are mostly smooth drywall panels that are painted – not really wallpaper, but no rough plaster either. The ceiling is suspended with gypsum board. I really want to avoid drill holes as much as possible since the landlord is very strict. Also, I only have a ceiling height of 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in), which makes ceiling-high Platsa systems difficult to install. I am considering a freestanding solution with several modules that I can stabilize without plugs or screws. This brings me to the question: How can I securely connect multiple modules together without wall mounting so that nothing wobbles or tips over? Are there specific connection methods from IKEA or accessories you would recommend?

You can securely connect PLATSA elements using the original furniture fasteners provided by IKEA. These effectively stabilize the modules together. Additionally, I recommend using corner brackets and anti-tip straps that can be installed without wall anchors—some even use adhesive tape. This way, everything remains stable and can be removed without leaving any marks.

In my rental apartment, I simply avoided making drill holes and assembled PLATSA using heavy-duty tape and brackets. This holds very well as long as the load is not excessive. Additionally, straps with hooks or magnetic fastenings are suitable for attaching doors individually.

The IKEA connector sets for PLATSA are modular and very useful for mechanically joining multiple modules into a single unit.

Additionally, it is advisable to use anti-tip devices, which are usually screwed into the floor or wall, but there are special models that can be attached with adhesive strips. For example, "3M Command" strips or similar adhesive anchors from hardware stores provide a reliable fix without visible drill holes.

Another option is weighted bases or furniture stoppers that are placed under the modules to prevent tipping. This provides a stable foundation without causing damage to the residence.

I used magnetic fasteners for my PLATSA furniture in the rental apartment. They can be removed without leaving any residue and provide enough stability when you join the modules together. Additionally, you can easily swap the doors if you want to change the look.
