Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an Ikea Metod kitchen island myself and am looking for a detailed guide or practical firsthand tips. I am especially interested in the following points:
- What is the best approach to the installation to avoid mistakes?
- Are there any special tools or materials required for the Metod kitchen island, or that make assembly significantly easier?
- How should the wiring and integration of electrical appliances into the island be handled?
- What challenges or pitfalls should be considered, particularly regarding alignment and stability?

I already have some basic knowledge, can read technical drawings, and am comfortable using a cordless drill. It would be very helpful if someone could share their experiences to help optimize my planning. Thank you in advance!

The cooktop and sink have specific connection requirements: the cooktop requires a separate, protected circuit, which should ideally be installed by a professional.

An important addition: especially when installing a cooktop in a Metod island, make sure to follow electrical installation regulations, particularly the VDE standards in Germany. It is advisable to consult an electrician beforehand, even if you prefer DIY installation, to minimize liability and safety risks.

Also, installation can become problematic if the countertop is already in place before the wiring is fully completed. Therefore, I recommend addressing the wiring and installation of electrical appliances as early as possible to allow easier adjustments if needed.

For cable routing, use flexible cable ducts and attach them inside the cabinet boxes. Test all connections before installation. Secure the cooktop separately.

Are there any recommendations on the best way to fasten the cable ducts so they remain stable even when cabinets or built-in appliances move, without damaging the surface of the cabinet boxes? Gluing or screwing seems problematic, as I would like to maintain flexibility.

For attaching cable ducts without damaging the modules, I recommend self-adhesive cable ducts with high-quality acrylic adhesive. These are stable enough to guide cables but can be removed without leaving any residue.

Alternatively, clips or holders fixed with screws can be used if the surface is sturdy. These provide greater stability but are more invasive.

If cabinets are moved or built-in appliances are installed, it is advisable to route and fix the ducts in a way that no tension is applied to the cables. A loose loop layout helps with this.

I recently built a Metod island myself. It’s important to plan the assembly in stages. First, assemble and connect the base cabinets, then install the countertop, and finally handle the electrical installation.

Are there any recommendations on how to best secure cable channels so they remain stable even when cabinets or built-in appliances are moved, without damaging the cabinet surfaces?

I used self-adhesive channels and additionally secured them with small mounting straps placed inside the corners. This holds well and doesn’t cause any damage. It’s also important to lay the cables without unnecessary tension, otherwise the adhesive tape tends to come loose faster.
