Hello!
We have started planning the renovation of our 1970s hipped roof bungalow. To gather ideas, we consulted several companies. They gave different opinions about the condition of our building, so as a precaution, we would like to consult an independent expert. Topics naturally include energy-efficient measures, but first and foremost the absolute basics: is our building structurally sound, can it support a renovation or an additional floor, and our main concern: a flat roof extension from 2013 is reportedly at risk of settling, according to an engineer. He recommends underpinning. We purchased the building last year.
Now we want to know how to protect our “baby” from further damage and determine its actual current condition in order to decide how to proceed. The companies want to sell their services, but we are not sure if they fully understand the risks.
Ultimately, we want more living space for the children, but it must be safe and durable.
One more detail: we live on a peat bog. To our knowledge, the building — as well as significantly older neighboring buildings — was constructed without deep foundation piles. This is supposedly due to a type of sand ridge. The older main building is brick-clad and in its original state shows no cracks or damage. The building has a partial basement.
Back to the question: who can provide competent advice and be our “specialist” for this matter?
Greetings from the Oldenburg area
