Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to expand my IKEA KALLAX shelving system because I need additional storage space and the standard size is not quite enough. My question to you is: Has anyone had experience combining or expanding KALLAX with other systems or shelves? Specifically, I am interested in whether the KALLAX units can be easily connected with other furniture, for example, with shelving systems that can be flexibly adjusted or to which different modules can be added.
I am also curious about how stable such combinations are, whether the KALLAX shelves fit well at the connection points, and if there are alternatives for special inserts such as doors, drawers, or baskets that are not part of the IKEA range.
I look forward to your experiences and tips on how to expand KALLAX sensibly without making the whole structure unstable or prone to wear too quickly. Thanks in advance!

Hello again,
regarding the universal inserts, it’s worth checking out accessory brands like elvarli or storage boxes from Container Store, which usually fit well. You can also find several online sellers offering drawer boxes that are specifically designed for KALLAX.
Magnetic strips are more suitable for lighter modules that can be easily attached to the surface. For firmer connections, screws and brackets are really the best choice, especially for heavier loads.
About your idea with RÅSKOG and IVAR: depending on the implementation, it can work very well. RÅSKOG is flexible thanks to its wheels, while IVAR is more solid and functions like a wooden building system. Combining them increases storage space and creates a unique look. It’s important to connect the modules at appropriate points, for example with brackets or special clamps.
That sounds like an exciting project! I would recommend planning for extra stability at the connection points, especially if the cart will be moved.

Ich habe an eine Kombination mit dem RÅSKOG Wagen oder auch dem IVAR-System gedacht – beides sind ja auch von IKEA

I used brackets for the connection – they hold really well.I completely agree, brackets are simply the most reliable solution.
Additionally, I would emphasize that when combining different systems, the weight of the items to be stored is important – some shelving units are not designed for heavy loads.
For your project, Batra, it would be a good idea to test how the various components work together with a small sample piece before the final assembly. This way, you can identify potential weak points early on.
Your idea to combine KALLAX with RÅSKOG and IVAR sounds really creative and could work very well, as long as you carefully consider the mounting and ensure stability. Good luck with it!
