Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to expand my IKEA KALLAX shelving system because I need additional storage space and the standard size is not quite enough. My question to you is: Has anyone had experience combining or expanding KALLAX with other systems or shelves? Specifically, I am interested in whether the KALLAX units can be easily connected with other furniture, for example, with shelving systems that can be flexibly adjusted or to which different modules can be added.
I am also curious about how stable such combinations are, whether the KALLAX shelves fit well at the connection points, and if there are alternatives for special inserts such as doors, drawers, or baskets that are not part of the IKEA range.
I look forward to your experiences and tips on how to expand KALLAX sensibly without making the whole structure unstable or prone to wear too quickly. Thanks in advance!

Hello Batra,
First of all, thank you for your detailed question – it makes it much easier to address!
KALLAX units can actually be combined quite well with other systems, although the stability largely depends on how you connect the individual parts. For example, if you add shelves from another brand, using brackets or special clamps can help provide extra stability.
Exactly, screws are usually the best option. If you plan to use doors or drawers from other manufacturers, be sure to compare the dimensions – IKEA’s KALLAX has very precise measurements, while other brands sometimes differ.
Another tip: For custom inserts, you can use so-called universal drawers that fit many shelving systems. There are also flexible systems that can be inserted directly into KALLAX.
I hope this helps!

I understand well how frustrating it can be when you want to expand a stable system like KALLAX and struggle with fitting accuracy. I experienced something similar when I tried to combine open shelves from other brands with KALLAX. In the end, I decided to keep all expansions within the IKEA ecosystem because it simply holds together better and looks more harmonious.
I can confirm that about the IKEA doors. The solution feels well thought out and makes maintenance and later replacement easier.
If you try experimental combinations with different materials, I would recommend paying special attention to the attachment points. Maybe you could also find options with hook-and-loop fasteners or magnetic strips if permanent screws are not an option.
Have you already considered which shelving systems you specifically want to connect to KALLAX?

I got the doors from IKEA itself, they fit well.

Thank you for your feedback so far, very helpful!
That sounds interesting. Do you have any recommendations for stores or brands that offer suitable universal inserts? It would be great if these modules are flexible and compatible with KALLAX, as I am looking for some affordable storage boxes.
That sounds creative! So far, I had planned to rely more on screws or brackets, but if there are also visually appealing and reversible solutions, I would be very interested.
Regarding your question: I was thinking about a combination with the RÅSKOG cart or the Ivar system – both are from IKEA but differ in appearance. I want something in between that is not only practical but also stable. Does anyone have experience with this?
