Hello everyone, I recently put together an IKEA Platsa system for my apartment and find the basic concept quite flexible. However, I am looking for ways to increase storage capacity, possibly through custom modifications or additional components.
Has anyone here made their own extensions or adjustments to the PLATSA furniture to effectively maximize the available storage space? I am particularly interested in clever add-ons, extra interior organization options, or conversions that go beyond the standard IKEA components.
I look forward to your suggestions and experiences!

For binders, it is better to use height-adjustable shelves and allow a bit more space. Drawers should only be installed at the front; otherwise, they become difficult to handle. Adding extra depth to the back panel does not create more storage space, as screws often protrude there.

I equipped my PLATSA cabinets with LED strips that turn on when the doors are opened – not only does it look stylish, but it also helps when expanding storage space and visibility inside would otherwise be limited.
I can definitely recommend this if you want multifunctional modifications without having to take the whole system apart. 😄

Primarily, it’s about folders in binders, some craft materials of varying sizes, and various kitchen utensils that aren’t used often but still need to be easily accessible. Thanks for the clarification. For binders, as joro10 mentioned, it helps to install shelves at different heights to make the best use of storage space for these taller items.
For craft materials, a combination of fixed and modular shelving is recommended—for example, stackable boxes that can either be hung with hooks on the back panel or placed on a mobile rolling cart, which can also be stored under the PLATSA unit when not in use.
Kitchen utensils that are rarely used can be conveniently stored in lockable boxes in the upper section, where constant access is not necessary.
A mix of drawers and open compartments would also be practical, depending on how often you need to access the items.

I also really like JAFUHAU’s idea of angled shelves for the small sections.I’m glad to hear you like it! In my experience, making small DIY adjustments—rather than major renovations—is the best way to achieve a good balance between effort and benefit.
I also like to try sliding rails for compartments that are otherwise hard to reach. It saves time and frustration—especially in the kitchen and craft areas.
