ᐅ The front-facing windows are suboptimal and need to be improved.

Hello,
we have already started construction and the shell is complete. Unfortunately, looking back now, I find the front elevation bothers me. Even during the planning phase, I wasn’t completely convinced, but I was repeatedly told that the house should be designed from the inside out. We have now decided to accept changes costing up to 4,000 EUR to avoid living with this discomfort for a lifetime. Unfortunately, the changes can only be made after the building acceptance. Many things can be done by my husband, who already has a lot of DIY experience. Every time I look at it, I feel like giving up, and I hope you can save the façade with some great ideas.
I’m uploading a few pictures.
Thank you very much in advance

WilderSueden2 Nov 2022 10:30I wouldn’t suggest making any structural changes here but rather have the painter do their work or use wooden elements. Installing different or larger windows requires breaking through the wall (new structural calculations needed?), the actual window, roller shutters, plastering, and painting. That’s a lot for a small budget.
Overall, I find the facade quite a chaotic mix of various sizes and shapes.

Costruttrice2 Nov 2022 10:34I also think your husband’s idea isn’t bad at all! If no structural changes are possible, it will definitely make a noticeable visual difference.
Personally, I would find the parents’ bathroom more disturbing from the inside than from the outside. It will really be quite dark. I can’t estimate what a change would cost, but it will certainly be cheaper now than after completion!
First, I would clarify whether it is structurally feasible, whether the change might need to be approved compared to the building permit / planning permission, and what the realistic costs would be. Since he doesn’t want to handle this, he might demand a high price.
If you still want to proceed and there has been no progress, I would formally request the contractor in writing to provide a date by day x when the work will continue. If he can’t do that, then demand that the windows be enlarged. If a change is going to be made, it should be done now; I wouldn’t make any changes after completion.

@WilderSueden Actually, I had planned two floor-to-ceiling windows on the right and two equally sized windows on the left. Then the site manager got involved and made the windows smaller, and my husband thought it was practical because he would have more wall space. I was heavily pregnant and then just gave birth, so I couldn’t really engage with it, and now I’m stuck with the mess 🙁
@Costruttrice
I just called again; they won’t change the windows. There is supposed to be a delay of half a year. We have no insulation and are building with thick walls. Maybe that will make the replacement much easier.
@ypg yes, unfortunately the shell structure is already up 🙁

I wouldn’t handle this by phone, but in writing—especially when there is already a delay and everything is on hold.
Whether it’s worth disputing over this is another question; only you can decide that for yourselves.
Do you have a building expert or surveyor supporting you?
