Hello everyone! I recently started using the KALLAX shelf from IKEA in my small office setup to store various binders. Since I mainly need to store heavy binders filled with a lot of paper, I’m wondering: Is the KALLAX shelf really too weak for heavy binders, or can it easily handle this kind of load? What are your experiences or assessments? I’m especially looking for concrete information on how much weight a single KALLAX box can practically hold without damaging the shelf or causing the shelves to sag.

It’s great that you’re using the KALLAX shelf! 🙂 I have a few of these shelves myself and can say that it really depends on how you store the heavy files. In my experience, the shelf can hold more than you might expect – the shelves are sturdier than they seem! Of course, you shouldn’t load it with tons of weight, but in my opinion, it’s definitely enough for regular file binders. So don’t worry, just give it a try and enjoy your cool KALLAX 🙂

That may be true, but I wouldn’t accept that without further verification. It is important to adhere strictly to the load limits specified by the manufacturer for each shelf. My question is whether the weight of the binders was checked against the maximum load capacity of the shelves? Without knowing this data, it is hardly possible to make a reliable assessment regarding the load-bearing capacity. Often the shelves are simply made of particleboard, which can bend quickly under excessive load. If anyone has experience with specific load values, please share!

I also have the KALLAX in my office for heavy binders, and I have to say: it holds up quite well if you distribute the binders evenly. 😉 A few tips: don’t put all the heavy binders in one compartment; it’s better to spread them across several compartments. Also, regularly check the shelves to see if they are starting to sag. Oh, and attaching the unit to the wall gives it some extra stability. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be all steel! 😉

Yes, definitely! KALLAX can really hold a lot! 🙂 I once completely filled a compartment with thick binders – it handled the weight without any problem! My tip for anyone storing heavy items: be sure to use the back panel! It provides extra stability! Also, I recommend placing heavy binders on the lower shelves to maintain the stability of the unit. It’s a highly flexible system – absolutely load-bearing when used correctly! You’ve got this! 💪

KALLAX has a maximum load capacity of about 13-15 kg (29-33 lbs) per shelf. This can be tight for heavy binders. It is better to relieve the shelves and distribute the weight.
