ᐅ Is it true that KALLAX shelves are too weak for heavy binders?

Hello everyone! I recently started using the KALLAX shelf from IKEA in my small office setup to store various binders. Since I mainly need to store heavy binders filled with a lot of paper, I’m wondering: Is the KALLAX shelf really too weak for heavy binders, or can it easily handle this kind of load? What are your experiences or assessments? I’m especially looking for concrete information on how much weight a single KALLAX box can practically hold without damaging the shelf or causing the shelves to sag.
Additional information on load capacity: The standard shelves of the KALLAX are made of medium-density particleboard, which may bend under heavier loads. For higher weights, it is recommended to either add extra reinforcement (e.g., metal brackets beneath the shelves) or use appropriate metal shelves, if available. Otherwise, I would suggest distributing binders across multiple compartments to keep the load per shelf low and prevent long-term deformation.

It is important to adhere strictly to the load limits specified by the manufacturer for each compartment. Exactly! Here is a structured summary:
1. Read the manufacturer’s specifications: IKEA states a maximum load of about 13 kg (29 lbs) per compartment for the KALLAX unit.
2. Estimate the weight of binders: A fully loaded binder can weigh 3–5 kg (7–11 lbs).
3. Avoid overloading compartments: It’s better to use multiple compartments to distribute the weight.
4. Secure the back panels: Back panels and wall mounting significantly increase stability.
5. Regular inspection: Check shelves for sagging or damage.
Conclusion: The KALLAX is not inherently too weak for heavy binders, but careful use is essential!

For heavier loads, additional reinforcement is recommended That’s the key point for me. If you already have to consider reinforcing shelves with metal brackets, the system is simply not designed for that kind of load. For people with heavy binders, KALLAX is more of a compromise. It looks nice and is flexible, but real load-bearing furniture is something else. If you want something truly sturdy, it’s better to choose a robust steel shelving unit.

For people with heavy binders, KALLAX is more of a compromise. I see it differently! 🙂 For regular office environments, KALLAX is actually a great solution and saves a lot of space. Sometimes a bit of caution and clever organization is enough. However, if you want to store tons of weight, obviously you need a real heavy-duty shelving unit. But for standard binders, KALLAX is completely sufficient – I’m very happy with it! So don’t always see the worst, folks 😉
