Hello, as I mentioned before on the forum, due to the sloped site (and the fact that we need a basement anyway) we will probably omit the upper floor.
Now we plan to develop the basement as a fully functional living area with a large glass front. We spent several hours working on the floor plan and wanted to ask an architect for their opinion, but unfortunately all three architects I contacted are currently too busy with other projects.
So I’m asking for your help.
It was important to us that you can go directly from the ground floor down the stairs to the terrace, and otherwise to have as few square meters wasted on hallways as possible. The ground floor (above) is mostly open except for a small guest toilet and an office.
The staircase is separated by a large built-in wall cabinet. The terrace above partly extends the carport and partly will have a wooden structure to bring the terrace size to about 12–14m² (130–150 sq ft). The house is oriented southwest.

Thank you very much for any advice!

Dipl-WiING27 Nov 2013 10:21Hello and thanks again for the feedback! Maybe to provide a few more basic details: The plot is about 50m (165 feet) long and 20m (65 feet) wide, with a nice sloping view facing west. The building area is 15x15m (50x50 feet) at the upper part of the slope near the street, where the slope is about 8-10m (26-33 feet) from the start of the building area.
Our idea was to maximize natural sunlight and the view, so the house is planned to face west. The neighbors have similar plots and their houses are about 6-8m (20-26 feet) from the building area.
Since there is some noise exposure from the north and naturally less sun there, we wanted to place the carport on the north side. Because this can be built with a basement for utility purposes, I liked the idea of extending it all the way to the front of the house to use it as a terrace. That’s where the idea of having the entrance protected by the carport from the north comes from. Also, a rectangular exterior shape made sense to capture a lot of light and have a large living/kitchen area.
Now, I don’t want the living room to be divided by the staircase, nor should the stairs be too far from the entrance. To avoid losing bright living space downstairs to a stairwell, we want to place the staircase at the back in the basement. The middle room downstairs would have a glass front and door so that light from above (windows over the staircase) and below can enter through the room. I find a children’s room between 16-18m² (170-195 sq ft) suitable for the future. The basement space under the carport is planned for moderate development and will also have a door to the terrace.
I have scheduled an appointment with an architect for mid-December, but I think we need to work out the floor plan ourselves first. It’s certainly a challenging process (which I never expected), but we’re already deep into it. Thanks again for your comments; I’ll try to incorporate the last ones this evening.
Until then...

Nevertheless, I think we first need to work out our floor plan ourselves. No, that would only limit your ability to objectively consider other solutions, and if you show your result to the architect, it could also hinder their creativity in finding a good solution.
Instead, definitely make a list of the things that are important to you, like in my post above regarding sleeping, bathroom, etc., of course as detailed as possible.

Dipl-WiING12 Dec 2013 16:49Hello, it took a bit longer than expected... Ok, I have now discussed the design with various experts such as architects. Even though I’m not 100% satisfied yet, or maybe because of that, I’d like to present it here again for discussion. If you point out any issues, please also suggest possible improvements, as that’s the only way it will help me. I am now considering whether to build a basement under the carport in front of the house or to have a prefabricated basement next to the house only…

Doc.Schnaggls13 Dec 2013 09:38Hello,
I am missing the windows in the basement level.
I also find the relatively narrow passage between the front door/stairs and the kitchen wall to be problematic.
The placement of the kitchen island is also difficult – the passage there seems to be only about 50cm (20 inches) wide...
