Dear community,

We are currently planning the renovation of a single-family house built in 1974. As part of this, we also want to adjust the layout of the rooms on the ground floor. At the moment, the kitchen is located in a side section of the building, which means a longer walking distance to the living room/parents’ bedroom.

In the attached floor plan of the current condition, you can see the existing "fireplace room" and the living room, separated by a small hallway. The only terrace door on the ground floor is installed in the fireplace room, so it should remain easily accessible.

We are still waiting for the structural engineer’s assessment on whether the thick partition wall can be completely removed or to what extent it can be taken out. Regardless, we are considering different planning alternatives.

Option 1: The partition wall can be removed, creating a large, open space (8.10 m x 5.87 m = 47.5 sqm (87 ft x 19 ft = 511 sq ft)). Honestly, I don’t find this size particularly large for an open living/dining/kitchen area and wouldn’t know how to arrange these three spaces effectively. Do you have any ideas?

Option 2: The central wall cannot be removed. In that case, we might move the doorways (closing the wall on the left and creating the passage to the living room along the terrace door on the right). The access to the new rooms would then be shifted from left to right. The new small room would be the kitchen – but here too, we’re unsure how to arrange the rooms and furniture so that the kitchen, dining, and living areas have enough space.
Do you have any suggestions for this setup?

In option 2, we are also concerned that the fireplace might have to be removed – which we would prefer to avoid. If it can’t be helped… (on the "other" side of the chimney shaft is the entrance hall, where I think a fireplace would be less practical).

I am really looking forward to the collective intelligence and your creative suggestions.

It might be useful to show the entire ground floor layout and include the north arrow as well as the garden orientation.

And then the question… will the windows be renovated as well? It might also be possible to convert an existing window into a patio door.

Attached is the full floor plan. The north arrow points to the left, so the patio door faces south, where the terrace will also be located. Yes, the windows will be renovated as well; however, the house is situated on a slight slope, meaning there is a hill beneath all the windows on the east side in the current living room. Unfortunately, this makes it impossible to install a patio door there. Only the further window facing south could theoretically be converted.
