Hello everyone,

I am considering protecting the exposed edges of my Kallax shelving frame with foam. I am especially interested in how well foam works as edge protection for Kallax shelves in daily use.

I want to avoid the edges being too hard, so that, for example, children don’t easily bump into them or items don’t get damaged. It is also important to me how well the foam adheres to the surface, whether it remains stable over time, and if there are specific types of foam that are particularly suitable – such as strips, profiles, or roll material. Are there any issues with installation or cleaning?

If you have experience with the appearance, feel, or durability, I would appreciate detailed information.

Thank you in advance!

I use foam edge protectors on several pieces of furniture myself. It is important to thoroughly clean the surface before applying the adhesive, otherwise it will come off quickly.

For Kallax, I would recommend using thicker profiles, as thinner ones hardly offer any protection against impacts.

EVA and PE foams are very suitable due to their closed-cell structure and durability. They resist moisture, dirt, and maintain their shape well.

That is correct. UV radiation breaks down the material structure over time. Therefore, foam profiles should preferably be chosen for shaded areas or with UV protection.

For the Kallax shelf unit, it is also advisable to pre-install profiled edge protectors on the corners, as they tend to be impact points rather than the edges themselves.
