Hello everyone,

I would like to equip my Billy bookshelf with drawers and I’m wondering what options are available. Specifically, I’m interested in what types of drawers can be retrofitted to an existing Billy bookshelf without damaging or destabilizing the shelf itself. Also important: what about the load capacity, and are there any special fasteners or kits that you would recommend?

Does anyone have experience with these kinds of modifications or perhaps tips on installation and materials?

Looking forward to your opinions!

Most official IKEA drawer inserts for Billy are designed to be placed on existing shelves without damaging them.

The maximum load capacity is about 8 kg (17.6 lbs) per drawer, as previously mentioned. Metal ball-bearing slides ensure a long service life. Using plastic slides shortens the lifespan and puts more strain on the shelf material.

If other drawer systems are used, re-drilling or screwing may be necessary, which must be done carefully to avoid compromising stability.

Wall mounting is essential when the load from drawers is significantly increased.

Regarding screws:

I would recommend using screws with a diameter of 3 to 4 mm (about 0.12 to 0.16 inches) and a length of 30 to 40 mm (about 1.2 to 1.6 inches), ideally wood screws with a countersunk head. Pre-drilling with a small drill bit helps protect the material from splitting.

Alternatively, there are also systems with clamps or clamping connections if you want to work in a way that is as reversible as possible.

If you plan to install drawers with metal runners, it helps to use alignment guides when attaching the runner rails to avoid problems with drawer movement.

One more thought on the loads:

The lever principle should not be underestimated. When you pull the drawers out fully, tension is created on the side panels of the shelving. These are thin and not designed to withstand tensile forces. This can easily cause the side panel to tear if the load is too heavy or the drawers are pulled out completely.

Therefore, I strongly recommend either considering the drawer extension length when selecting the drawers or installing additional reinforcements, such as metal brackets on the inside or a cross brace at the back.

Furthermore, it makes sense to install the drawers only in the middle of the shelving unit and leave open compartments above and below to maintain overall stability.
