Hello everyone,

I am considering adding casters to my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit to make it easier to move around the room. I find it especially useful to be able to shift furniture easily in smaller apartments or multipurpose rooms.

My question is: Is it really worth investing in casters for the KALLAX unit? Has anyone had experience with whether the casters are sturdy enough to support the weight and if the extra effort in terms of installation and cost is really justified?

It would also be important for me to know if there are any practical limitations – for example, regarding the load capacity, the stability of the shelving unit, or whether the casters work well on different floor types.

I look forward to your experiences and opinions!

Absolutely, it’s brilliant! I equipped my KALLAX with high-quality, ball-bearing casters that can hold a lot of weight and even roll smoothly on carpet.

Sure, there is a bit of effort involved in the installation, but the result is incredibly practical since you can easily move the shelf when rearranging or cleaning the floor.

I can definitely recommend it, even though the casters aren’t cheap — the investment is really worth it, especially if you want flexibility! 🙂

I partly agree with todunar’s assessment but would like to add the following: The casters need to match the load, otherwise the stability of the shelving unit will be compromised.

KALLAX is not designed for frequent movement under heavy load. If you plan to move the shelving regularly, I recommend casters with a locking brake and a minimum load capacity of 20 kg (44 lbs) per caster.

Also, keep in mind that the height of the shelving unit will change slightly, which could be an issue when fitting it between other furniture.

Overall, it’s a reasonable idea, but the choice of casters should be carefully considered.

I find the idea of adding casters really interesting, although I have to admit that I haven’t dared to try it yet.

I’m a bit unsure whether the KALLAX remains stable with the casters—I’m worried it might become too wobbly, especially if you bump into the shelf.

Maybe those who have already installed casters could share how the shelf feels in everyday use? How does it affect the stability?

I’m looking forward to your feedback, as having that kind of flexibility for my shelf would be really practical.

I question that: flexibility through casters is appealing, but at what cost to stability and safety?

KALLAX units are fairly stable with their back panels, but they are not designed for mobility. Adding casters changes the center of gravity and could increase the risk of tipping, especially if the load is unevenly distributed or if children are nearby.

Therefore, it’s important to clearly weigh the pros and cons and avoid simply attaching casters without additional stabilization.

Are there any experiences regarding safety aspects with this kind of modification?

Wheels on the KALLAX are useful when needed but not suitable for constant moving.

Lockable wheels are important.

Pay attention to the load capacity of the wheels.
