Hello everyone,

I have a Kallax shelving unit at home that I like to use open because it feels airy and modern. However, I am increasingly annoyed by the dust that accumulates on the surfaces. Now I am wondering if there are simple yet effective dust protection solutions for open Kallax shelves that can significantly reduce dust buildup without completely changing the look.

My specific question is: What options do you know of or use to protect open Kallax shelves from dust? Are there, for example, suitable privacy panels, doors, covers, or perhaps special films or sprays that help? And how practical are these solutions in everyday use, especially regarding cleaning or access to the items on the shelves?

I would be very grateful for tips, experiences, and recommendations!

Hey Tagodi,

it's great that you bring up this topic here! I have an open Kallax shelf myself and completely understand your dust problems. I use a clear plastic glass plate that I place on the shelf compartments. It protects really well against dust, looks nice, and still allows a clear view inside.

It's easy to wipe clean and very low maintenance! 🙂 Especially if you have a lot of dust, this is the best solution I've tried so far.

If you enjoy DIY projects, you can also customize transparent acrylic sheets and attach them to the front. This gives a somewhat "closed look" without damaging the design.

Good luck experimenting, and don’t let the dust bother you ;-)

This solution is quite effective, but it should be noted that plastic glass (acrylic or polycarbonate) can be prone to scratching. For a long-lasting dust protection measure on open Kallax shelves, custom-made doors made of MDF or glass are definitely advisable.

There are also original attachment doors from Ikea specifically designed for Kallax models, which fit perfectly and are relatively cost-effective. These not only offer dust protection but also help to keep things better organized.

Doors and covers are generally easy to clean and provide quick access. Plexiglass panels can be wiped down easily but may be damaged by harsh cleaning agents. Another option is decorative fabric curtains, which help trap dust but are less opaque.

Overall, installing doors is the most robust solution if dust reduction is a top priority.

I simply installed folding roller doors that I can open when needed. This works great and keeps the dust out.

Otherwise, I can only recommend wiping with a damp cloth regularly – it reduces the effort.

Plastic sheeting hardly provides any lasting benefit.
