Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit in my apartment, which I use both for storage and as a room divider. I have noticed that a lot of dust quickly accumulates behind the shelf, on its backside, and it is difficult to reach and clean.

My question is: Does anyone have experience or tips on how to effectively prevent or at least reduce the amount of dust that gathers behind a KALLAX shelf? I suspect it is related to air circulation and cleaning frequency, but perhaps there are practical solutions or tricks.

It would be great if you could also share cleaning methods or recommend any protective covers or products that could help reduce this problem. Thanks in advance!

I know this problem all too well! I’ve also moved my KALLAX shelf slightly forward and use a small handheld vacuum with a flexible hose, which works really well for reaching behind it.

What I highly recommend is occasionally spraying a microfiber-safe antistatic dust protector on the back – it really makes a difference!

And hey, be patient 🙂 It takes some time for these measures to have a full effect, but the results are very satisfying. No more annoying dust bunnies – give it a try! 🙂

I’ll try moving it a bit forward and see if the dust still builds up that much.

That’s a good plan! Additionally, I’d like to mention that occasionally pulling the shelf out completely really helps to thoroughly clean the hard-to-reach areas.

Also, regularly cleaning the air filters in your apartment can help reduce the amount of dust in the air over time.

If you like, you can share how long it takes you to clean the area beforehand and how your experience with the new position is. That way, we can assist you more specifically.

In the meantime, I have moved the shelf about 4 cm (1.5 inches) away from the wall, which makes vacuuming a bit easier. Previously, it took me a good 10 minutes just for the back and the narrow gap. Now it takes about 5 minutes, and the amount of dust has significantly decreased.

I have scheduled moving the shelf for a complete cleaning roughly every 6 weeks, and that seems to work well.

Thanks again for the tips, especially the antistatic spray, which I will try on my next shopping trip. I’ll update here if I learn anything new.
