Hello everyone, I recently looked into the Ivar system from IKEA and am considering combining it with a Kallax shelving unit. My question is: Does the Kallax really work well together with the Ivar system? Specifically, I am interested in the aesthetic effect, the stability when both systems are combined, and whether the dimensions harmonize well enough to make a practical furniture arrangement. I would like to hear about any experiences here in the forum, especially regarding potential issues or benefits of combining them. Thanks in advance!
To add a technical perspective: The module size of Kallax is 33 x 33 cm (13 x 13 inches) per compartment, with an overall depth of about 39 cm (15 inches). IVAR elements come in various versions; typical shelves are usually around 30 cm (12 inches) deep. This often results in a slight offset edge when combining them.
Regarding load capacity, the manufacturer states a maximum load of about 13 kg (29 lbs) per Kallax compartment, while IVAR can support significantly higher loads due to its solid construction.
If you want to connect a combination permanently and securely, special drillings, brackets, or custom-made connector boards are required. However, this is not standard and requires some DIY skills. For purely freestanding combinations without direct connections, you need to expect visible differences in wood thickness and surface texture.

A tip: If you want to match the height, add some decorative elements on top so that both shelves visually blend together. That’s a good suggestion. Additionally, you should consider the colors and materials in the surroundings. A deliberate color scheme helps to visually soften the style differences.
