Hello everyone,

I am considering using my IKEA Kallax shelf as a coat rack, but I have some concerns about its functionality. Does anyone here have experience with whether the Kallax is actually suitable as a coat rack?

I imagine using the compartments to store hats, scarves, and gloves, and maybe attaching hangers or hooks to the shelf to hang jackets. However, I wonder if it is stable enough and if the whole setup is practical without looking messy quickly or the shelf suffering under the weight.

What are your experiences, especially regarding load capacity and usefulness in an entryway? Does anyone have tips for optimizing it?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hey, that’s actually a pretty cool idea! The Kallax is really versatile—true, it’s more of a shelving unit than a coat rack, but with a bit of creativity, it can work really well. I’d recommend attaching hooks or rods to the sides or top so your jackets can hang securely.

Regarding stability: the shelf can handle quite a bit, but if you want to hang really heavy coats or many items, I’d also reinforce the back panel or secure the whole unit to the wall to prevent it from wobbling or tilting.

Also, the cubes offer space for baskets—perfect for scarves and hats. That way, everything stays organized 😎

In summary: yes, it works—but make yourself comfortable and customize the shelf a bit!

Using the Kallax as a coat rack is generally feasible if a few points are considered.

It is important that the shelf unit is anchored to the wall, as it could tip over under load otherwise. By default, the shelf is designed for loose storage and not meant to support heavy clothing on hooks.

The compartments are well suited for smaller textiles like hats or gloves, possibly stored in baskets. To hang jackets, I recommend sturdy hooks or an additional clothes rail installed along the top edge.

Depending on the number and weight of the jackets, the shelf unit might be stable enough. However, in very busy hallways or for very heavy coats, it is advisable to limit the weight or use a different piece of furniture.

I have completed a similar project myself and can confirm that the appearance remains neat as long as order is maintained.

Kallax works as a coat rack only if you attach hooks and securely fix the shelf to the wall. Otherwise, it tends to tip over easily. This is usually sufficient for light jackets and coats.

I would recommend not hanging heavy coats or wet clothing directly on the Kallax. The shelf is not designed to handle that well. Instead, use bins or boxes for accessories and a separate coat rack or rail for jackets.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Are there any suitable hooks that can be easily attached to the Kallax without damaging its stability or material? I don’t want to drill holes if it might weaken or harm the shelf.

Alternatively, I was thinking about using clamp or adhesive hooks, but I’m unsure if they will hold up with regular use. Does anyone have experience with that?

Also, I wonder if IKEA’s own compatible accessories (for example, hanging organizers with Velcro or similar) might be a practical solution?
