Has anyone had experience modifying Ikea Platsa units? I’m planning to alter the Platsa components to create more customized storage solutions in different configurations – particularly interested in integrating drawers and possibly doors from another series to vary the design a bit. I’m mainly wondering how easy or difficult it is to take the modules apart and adapt them, whether drilling holes yourself involves a lot of effort, and if there could be any stability issues. If possible, it would be great to hear any tips on suitable tools or techniques to ensure the modification is done neatly and lasts over time. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

I’m mainly wondering how easy or difficult it is to disassemble and modify the modulesThe Platsa components can be disassembled relatively easily, but it is important to work systematically and carefully document each connection to avoid mistakes when reassembling. It is essential to open and close the connection points using the original screws and fittings; drilling new holes is only recommended if there is no other mounting option, as this can weaken the material.

whether there could be any issues regarding stabilityThe stability remains intact with proper handling, but the thinner panels are not designed to carry very heavy loads. During modifications, especially when joining or extending modules, it is important to ensure there are sufficient support points. Additional brackets or reinforcements may be useful if needed.
I recommend using tools such as a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque, a drill, and an appropriate sanding surface for finishing edges. Finally, it is worthwhile to create a drawing or sketch beforehand to plan the conversion properly.

Tools I recommend: cordless drill with torque control, a drill, and a suitable sanding pad for finishing edges.Oh yes, I can definitely agree with that! A few months ago, I remodeled my Platsa modules myself, and I can only say: it’s a lot of fun once you get the hang of it! 😄💪
A few tips from me:
- Take your time and work step by step
- If you want to install doors from other series, double-check the measurements beforehand
- Use small brackets and wooden dowels for extra support; you can find these cheaply at hardware stores
- And be careful not to overtighten the screws, or the surface may split
I was surprised how much you can adjust with little effort. Don’t worry, you can do it – just go for the new look of your Platsa!

- The Platsa cabinets are mainly connected with Minifix fittings and screws. These can be loosened without much effort; however, the material loses strength if the connection points are opened too frequently.
- Drilling yourself should only be done if you are certain not to drill through any load-bearing parts, as the panels consist of particleboard with a thin melamine coating. It is advisable to take precise measurements and use drilling templates beforehand.
- Combining Platsa with other series can be problematic since dimensions do not always match exactly. For a clean design finish during remodeling, adjustments to the front panels and cover pieces may occasionally be necessary.
- Stability issues mainly occur when modules are extended vertically or connected horizontally. These can be countered with additional back panels or metal brackets.
My advice: Before remodeling, plan a clear assembly, check all measurements and structural requirements, and use appropriate fasteners. This way, the modification can be done without unwanted side effects.
