Hello everyone, some time ago I purchased a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA with doors, which I primarily use for storage in my home office. However, I have noticed that the doors have become somewhat harder to open over the past few weeks. Therefore, I am very interested to know: Do the doors on the KALLAX generally become stiff over time, even with proper use and installation? Or are such issues rather isolated cases, possibly caused by assembly, material defects, or environmental factors?

I am especially interested in whether the hinge materials or door mechanisms typically wear out or warp. Any tips on maintenance or readjustment would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice!

It’s interesting how many people refer to readjustment and lubrication.

Personally, I would say that incorrect installation and improper handling are major contributing factors. Especially with a modular system like KALLAX, door alignment is essential. So the issue is less about the product itself and more often about how it is installed.

I have had KALLAX doors for three years myself with no stiffness. However, I regularly check the screws and make minor adjustments.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful responses and tips.

I will carefully inspect the hinges as described by bulanau and adjust them if necessary. The comment about moisture exposure as a cause is particularly interesting to me, since the piece of furniture is not located in a damp room, but perhaps the humidity in winter is higher than I thought.

I will check that thoroughly as well, since I did quite a bit of the assembly on my own back then – maybe sometimes a bit too quickly.

If the problems persist after that, I will report back. Thanks again!
