Hello everyone, some time ago I purchased a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA with doors, which I primarily use for storage in my home office. However, I have noticed that the doors have become somewhat harder to open over the past few weeks. Therefore, I am very interested to know: Do the doors on the KALLAX generally become stiff over time, even with proper use and installation? Or are such issues rather isolated cases, possibly caused by assembly, material defects, or environmental factors?

I am especially interested in whether the hinge materials or door mechanisms typically wear out or warp. Any tips on maintenance or readjustment would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice!

I find the question itself quite interesting because many furniture manufacturers advertise their products as durable.

In my experience, this is a matter of expectations. KALLAX is a relatively affordable shelving system. If you look closely, the materials are often not high-performance components, and moving parts like hinges in budget furniture are not always built using the most durable techniques.

That doesn’t mean the doors should become hard to operate immediately – however, dust, lack of maintenance, or incorrect installation can cause this quickly. I would even say you have to expect the hinges to 'settle' after a few months and need some adjustment.

I can confirm this. Just spray the hinges with WD40 or some silicone spray. Then the door will operate smoothly again.

To answer the question:

The doors of the KALLAX shelving unit are fitted with simple mechanical hinges that are subject to some wear with regular use. Minor material deformations—such as those caused by moisture exposure to the wooden parts—can lead to increased resistance when opening and closing.

It should also be noted that while IKEA hinges are durable, they are not comparable to high-quality furniture fittings. Regular adjustment of the hinges (tightening or loosening the screws) can help maintain or restore smooth operation.

In summary: It is not unusual for the doors of the KALLAX to become harder to operate over time if no maintenance is performed or if environmental factors affect the components.

Here is a brief guide on how to check and adjust KALLAX doors if they are stiff:

1. First, locate the hinges on the door.
2. Check whether the screws need to be loosened or tightened – IKEA hinges usually have adjustment screws in three directions (sideways, height, depth).
3. Carefully adjust the screws with a Phillips screwdriver to better align the door.
4. If there is dirt or dust on the hinges, clean them with a dry cloth and, if necessary, apply silicone spray sparingly.
5. Open and close the door several times to check the adjustment.

Common mistakes include overtightening the screws or using too much oil, which attracts dust. Therefore, it is better to proceed with caution.

Yes, stiffness is common. Adjusting and applying a little WD40 or silicone oil usually helps. If that doesn’t work, check if the wood is warped.
