ᐅ Do the compartments in Kallax shelves tend to become misaligned over time?

Je_tan32Hello everyone,
I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: Do the compartments in IKEA Kallax shelves tend to become crooked over time? I have been using one of these shelves for several years and have noticed that especially the middle compartments don’t seem completely straight anymore, particularly when filled with books and somewhat heavier items.
I’m especially interested in whether this is simply typical material fatigue or possibly a design-related weakness that shows up in Kallax shelves over time. Could the shelf permanently warp due to the weight, or is it more likely caused by incorrect assembly?
Maybe someone can also explain the difference between the Kallax versions with and without a back panel, or offer tips on how to prevent this?
I’m really looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

The Kallax shelf is made from a wood-based panel with a melamine coating, which is generally stable but does not have the quality of solid wood. When shelves are heavily loaded with heavy books, the stress on the joints and the back panel can increase. Especially if the back panel is not fully or securely screwed in, the shelf can lose stability, causing certain compartments to sag or become misaligned.
Another factor is the base or floor on which the shelf stands. Unevenness can create tension within the frame, which may promote deformation in the long run.
Question: Do you use decorative items that mix objects of different weights in one compartment? What is the condition of your floor?
If you like, I can provide a brief guide on assembly and stabilization that can help prevent deformation over time.

Hey, this topic is really interesting! 🙂
I’ve been using my Kallax shelf for years, and the compartments never really warped – but I’m very careful to distribute the weight evenly and avoid putting anything too heavy in one section. That’s really important, otherwise the wood can bend!
So, just be confident and always distribute the load properly! If you do it right, a shelf like that can last a long time! 🙂

Hello Je_tan32,
I would like to outline a few basic factors that can cause the compartments in a Kallax shelf to become misaligned over time:
1. Material: Kallax is made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which is sturdy but susceptible to moisture and long-term stress.
2. Assembly: The back panel acts as a stabilizing diagonal brace. If it is not properly or fully secured, there is a higher risk of warping.
3. Load: Very heavy items in individual compartments can cause localized deformation. Even weight distribution is important.
4. Floor surface: An uneven floor can cause the shelf to shift, putting stress on the structure.
Recommendation: Check the back panel fastening, distribute the weight evenly, and place the shelf on a level surface. If the compartments still become misaligned, adding extra brackets or reinforcements can help.
I hope this overview assists you in your assessment!

Exactly, that’s why it’s better to put heavy books on the lower shelves and lighter items on top! This way, the shelf stays stable and looks great for longer. Just give it a try and make friends with your shelf! 😉
