Hello everyone, I am planning to use IKEA Metod cabinets in our children’s room, but I am unsure how to make them as child-friendly and durable as possible. The cabinets need to withstand regular use, including minor bumps and accidental pushing or climbing by the kids. It is also important to me that there are no sharp edges or dangerous corners, and that the cabinets are securely anchored to prevent tipping or falling on the children. Does anyone have experience with making Metod cabinets more stable without complex modifications? Are there any proven tips for child-friendly design—such as safe handles, suitable materials, or practical interior arrangements? I look forward to suggestions, as well as advice on appropriate child safety devices or reinforcements.

A practical and sustainable design of the Metod cabinets for the children’s area mainly involves reducing risks and increasing durability. For this, I recommend:

- Proper wall mounting using certified mounting hardware. This minimizes the risk of tipping over.

- Edge protection made from durable materials. PVC or silicone are suitable because they are easy to clean and have a long lifespan.

- The use of child-safe magnetic locks, as they are sturdy, durable, and make it easier for adults to open.

- Interior fittings with strong, preferably reinforced shelves, since children often grab with full force or throw objects inside.

Regularly checking the cabinets for loose screws or signs of wear is also important to ensure lasting safety. When selecting materials, it is advisable to consider environmental certifications whenever possible, as the children’s room is a sensitive area.

Hello Lamepu, to make the Metod cabinets more stable and child-friendly, I’d like to add some thoughts regarding surface finishes versus durability.

Most Metod components are made with melamine-coated panels. These are fairly scratch-resistant, but impacts on edges can cause chipping. It’s worth applying edge protection strips—either transparent or color-matched.

For the interior, I recommend sturdy plastic boxes or baskets that are easy to clean and offer some impact resistance. This also helps keep things organized and encourages children to keep items accessible and protected from an early age.

Currently, there are special hinges with soft-close and child safety features that can be retrofitted to the doors. Quality is important here because cheaper versions tend to wear out quickly.

What type of flooring do you have? I ask because of slip resistance when opening and closing the doors.

Wall anchoring is mandatory. Magnetic child safety locks are highly recommended. The original shelves are often too thin to support heavy use by children – reinforced shelves should definitely be used.

How old are the children, and how exactly do you use the cabinets? Are they mainly for toys or clothes?

Thank you for the detailed post. The children are 3 and 6 years old. The cabinets are mainly intended for clothes but will also be used for toys. Some smaller books will be stored there as well. This means that the compartments and door openings will be used frequently and probably experience somewhat rough handling.

Regarding the floor: it is laminate, which is quite smooth, so slip resistance is an important issue for me. I plan to secure the cabinets to the wall with anchors and am considering edge protectors. However, I am also wondering if it might be advisable to install additional safeguards to prevent children from slamming or swinging the doors too hard.

Are there any practical solutions or recommended products that can be discreetly mounted on Metod cabinets?
