Asmus3Hello everyone, I am currently planning my kitchen with Ikea Metod and have been focusing especially on the countertops. I have the following questions: How can Ikea Metod countertops be cut safely and precisely without fraying or being damaged? Even more importantly – which sealing methods provide long-lasting protection against moisture and scratches?
I understand that the right technique and good materials are important, but specific tips on tool selection, cutting techniques, and especially on the subsequent sealing would be really helpful. Does anyone have practical experience specifically with Ikea Metod countertops? Thanks in advance!

For safely cutting the Metod countertops, I recommend using a fine-toothed saw, ideally a jigsaw or circular saw with a guide rail. This helps prevent splintering. After cutting, be sure to seal the edges, for example with clear glue or a special edge sealer for laminate. It is important to let the sealant dry thoroughly before continuing to work with the countertop.
As an additional note: It is important to securely fix the countertop before cutting to prevent any movement. For Ikea Metod, the countertops are usually melamine-coated, which can cause the cut edges to chip easily. Therefore, the following applies:
- Tool: Electric circular saw with a fine-toothed blade (at least 60 teeth)
- Cutting direction: always with the coated edge facing forward, never the opposite
- After cutting, seal the cut edge with acrylic or polyester resin to protect against moisture
- Alternatively, an edge protection profile could also help, especially in humid rooms
This also protects against scratches once the sealant has fully cured.

For sealing, I usually use a clear furniture edge sealant designed specifically for laminate and melamine-coated boards. It’s important to apply it thinly and evenly and to carefully cover all edges.
Besides sealants, there are also water-based options that are odorless and more environmentally friendly, but they often require longer drying times.
If you expect frequent moisture – for example, near sinks – it might also be helpful to apply a silicone sealant between the countertop and the wall.
