Hello everyone,
My wife and I are expecting our second child in about six weeks, and since our first child, who is 1.5 years old, currently only has a crib in the corner of our home office, building a house is becoming increasingly urgent.
The house is planned to accommodate four children and must also include at least one full office and possibly a second office for my wife. The style should be somewhat like a country house.
We have already visited our architect twice and received advice, and I have just scanned the preliminary drawings. I would appreciate your opinions and suggestions, especially regarding potential design flaws that might become a recurring annoyance for us over the coming decades... in short:
What do you think?
Best regards and many thanks!
Frank

Coatroom: What would be a concrete alternative?
Pantry: Since the kitchen is located opposite the driveway, you either have to carry all the groceries through the house or carry smaller amounts over a few meters. At the moment, I still consider the second option the lesser evil. That’s why I would have planned the kitchen upstairs (north side?). There are also windows there and closer access towards the garage/pantry 🙂
I am also (almost) always in favor of having the utility room upstairs. Nevertheless, you have the basement, so it makes sense that you want or need to fill it with rooms as well. The “almost” refers to a house with a basement. However, I would set up a nice TV/ironing room there—I have never believed in spending half my day doing useless chores (ironing) in a laundry room... 🙄
At first, it was actually the other way around, but since a lot will likely happen in the dining room/kitchen area due to having several children, we swapped them to ensure this area gets plenty of daylight throughout the day. In our (previous) view, it is more important for this room to be bright and friendly than the living room, which will probably only be used for watching TV in the evenings. Furthermore, from the now south-facing open-plan kitchen/living area, you can look out over the neighboring property, which for the time being we can use as an extended garden. South is shown on the left side of the plans.

These things are so light... it’s really not a problem.
