Hello everyone,

My wife and I are expecting our second child in about six weeks, and since our first child, who is 1.5 years old, currently only has a crib in the corner of our home office, building a house is becoming increasingly urgent.
The house is planned to accommodate four children and must also include at least one full office and possibly a second office for my wife. The style should be somewhat like a country house.
We have already visited our architect twice and received advice, and I have just scanned the preliminary drawings. I would appreciate your opinions and suggestions, especially regarding potential design flaws that might become a recurring annoyance for us over the coming decades... in short:
What do you think?

Best regards and many thanks!

I tried it with Chrome for Android. It works with Firefox on the PC.

Wtf – I spent about a quarter of an hour on the tablet adding the links using "edit," and then a message popped up saying I had exceeded a time limit – and everything was gone...
Well, maybe tomorrow then...

Regarding the structural engineering: I hope the thicker wall is sufficient – and that the architect would have noticed otherwise...

With such a high number of occupants, everything that happens inside the house needs to be very efficient.
I don’t see that here in the main entrance with the tiny cloakroom, in the allocation of the pantry to the too-small kitchen (the dining area is large enough), in the number and distribution of bathrooms, or in the laundry handling (which should be located where the laundry is generated).
The living room feels cramped by the garage wall and gives a tunnel vision impression.
The idea of using the space after the children move out is understandable but ultimately tailored only to close family members.
With other people, one usually prefers not to live so closely together on the same property later on.

Hello and thank you very much for your assessment.

Regarding the cloakroom: It is mainly intended for guests – our coats and shoes will be stored in the pantry. This can be reached quickly from the driveway with groceries, but the house side would be too dark for the kitchen/dining area, right?
About the kitchen size: Should we reduce the ground floor office even more, or where would you suggest making space?
Bathrooms: Wouldn't one bathroom per floor be enough? There will also be plumbing in the attic, so if needed, we could still add a fourth bathroom there. What would be your recommendation?
Living room: What do you mean by "tightened"? This is the last full wall available for cabinets, the piano, and possibly the TV. Would you extend the garage further back to create an additional window?
Laundry: The shaft is quite close to the washing machine... what would be better here?

Thank you,
Frank

You are planning for 6 people plus guests.
For this reason, the (main) solution of using the pantry is not practical, especially considering everyday life with children. Additionally, since the kitchen is rather small, you will need a proper pantry. Then there are strollers and jogging strollers to consider, so you don’t even need to think about where to put the grandparents’ rollator.

The placement of the living kitchen is a separate matter. It’s about deciding where each room should be best located, taking into account the homeowners’ wishes and the plot of land.

There is enough space for that; you should integrate the kitchen planning into the overall design as soon as possible.

There are more practical solutions, for example, separating the toilet from the bathroom and placing sinks in the children’s rooms.

Then someone will still have to carry all the laundry back upstairs.

Overall, your plan is not bad, but also not very practical.

Wardrobe: What would be a specific alternative?
Storage room: Since the kitchen is located opposite the driveway, you either have to carry all the groceries through the house or transport individual items a few meters. At the moment, I still consider the second option the lesser evil.
Living room: Does the term "blinkers" refer to the solid wall? If so – the garage moved to the back, windows added to the living room, and a third garage door opening onto the terrace?
Laundry: The bedrooms are upstairs – is the plan to have the washing machine and utility room there as well? There probably won’t be enough space for that...
