Hello everyone, I am considering buying a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA but have some concerns about the product quality. My question is: What criteria and features should you really pay attention to when assessing the quality of the BILLY bookshelf to ensure you get a durable and sturdy piece of furniture? I am especially interested in tips regarding workmanship details, materials, and assembly. Additionally, it would be great if someone could share their personal experiences – for example, if the shelf has remained stable after long-term use or if issues appeared quickly. Thank you in advance!
I can only agree with relupa: the connection points are often a weak spot. I once felt that the shelf could become loose, especially with frequent repositioning.
The same happened to me. I understand how frustrating that can be. But with a little tightening and a secure wall mounting, I managed to fix the issue.
For surface care: I use a mild furniture oil, but only very sparingly and not applied directly over a large area to avoid damaging the material.

I would like to highlight the points made by BauSimon and RON57.
Make sure to securely fasten the back panel and fix the shelf to the wall.
Also, check the spacing of the shelves and insert the plastic stoppers correctly.
After a few months, always recheck the screws. If you follow these steps, the shelf will be very stable.

Thank you all for the detailed and helpful responses!
I especially appreciate the advice on assembly and the importance of the back panel and wall mounting. Your tips on surface care are also very valuable, as I plan to use the shelf in a fairly humid room, so I will need to be extra careful.
Here is what I have learned:
- When purchasing, check for clean, intact edges and make sure there is no damage
- Assemble carefully and patiently, tightening all screws properly
- Attach the back panel thoroughly, as it seems to be key to stability
- Secure the shelf to the wall with brackets, which is especially important for taller units
- Take care of the surface cautiously, avoiding moisture on the wood
- Periodically check during use that everything remains firmly in place
If anyone has additional tips or everyday experiences to share, please do! Thanks to everyone for the contributions so far!
