Hello everyone, I am considering buying a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA but have some concerns about the product quality. My question is: What criteria and features should you really pay attention to when assessing the quality of the BILLY bookshelf to ensure you get a durable and sturdy piece of furniture? I am especially interested in tips regarding workmanship details, materials, and assembly. Additionally, it would be great if someone could share their personal experiences – for example, if the shelf has remained stable after long-term use or if issues appeared quickly. Thank you in advance!

Hi, I would pay attention to the connection points – whether the shelves are securely seated and the screws hold firmly. I also always check the surface for scratches or dents. When the shelf is placed, it should stand straight without wobbling.

Gisin35, regarding the quality of the BILLY bookshelf:

1. Materials: The BILLY bookshelf is usually made from particle board with a melamine surface. These materials are affordable and durable but not waterproof – moisture must not reach the edges.

2. Joints: When assembling, make sure the dowels and metal brackets are properly and securely fitted. A common issue is uneven shelves caused by screws not being fully tightened or misaligned holes.

3. Finish: Check the edges carefully – the plastic edging (ABS edging) should be neatly glued, without gaps or protruding film.

4. Stability test: After assembly, gently wobble the shelf to check if it stands solidly and does not creak. If it does, additional brackets can help improve stability.

Summary: Furniture experts say that good materials combined with careful assembly result in durability. The bookshelf is not designed for heavy industrial use but is quite sturdy for regular residential use.

I find this question very important because people often buy too quickly without paying attention to details.
I once had a BILLY shelf that started to wobble at the joints after some time – which was very frustrating.

That’s definitely true, especially with furniture made of particleboard, where loosening at the screw joints is the most common issue.

I also worry because I want the furniture to look good for a longer time. Question for everyone: Are there any specific care tips to protect the material? I always use a dry, soft cloth, but I don’t want the plastic edges to swell.

First of all: Anyone who buys a BILLY shelf gets a solid standard piece of furniture that is quite good for the price.

However, if you want to enjoy it over the long term, you should consider the following points:

- Avoid moisture, as BauSimon already mentioned. Do not place wet cloths or hot pots on it.
- Follow the assembly instructions carefully, especially making sure to tighten the screws firmly.
- After assembly, make sure to attach and secure the back panel properly. It significantly increases stability.
- If the wall is not stable, fix the shelf to the wall using the supplied brackets. This prevents wobbling and improves safety.

Overall, the BILLY shelf is not a high-end piece of furniture, but with some care, it delivers a good result.

I like the BILLY shelf because it is so versatile and can be quickly adjusted – a true chameleon among shelves 🙂 Still, I would pay special attention to the edges and the back panel during quality control. Are the edges glued cleanly and is the back panel flat and properly attached? My tip: after assembly, gently tap the corners with your finger; if it sounds hollow, something might not be fixed properly. In that case, it’s better to tighten it again!

And don’t worry, the shelf will easily last several years under normal use – if not longer.
