Hello everyone, I am currently considering how easy or difficult it is to change the colors of the IKEA Brimnes furniture. Specifically, I am interested in whether the surfaces can be repainted or modified using other techniques like vinyl wrapping or staining without damaging the furniture or compromising its appearance. Does anyone have experience with how well the surfaces of the BRIMNES models accept color changes? Which methods work best – is the rectangular MDF base material easy to work with, or are there issues with the paint or laminate coating? It would also be helpful to know if the furniture can be redesigned easily or if it’s better to stick to the color options provided by IKEA from the start. Thanks for your insights!

The BRIMNES furniture from IKEA usually has a melamine-coated surface, which does not hold paint well. If you want to repaint it, you need to sand the surface very thoroughly beforehand. Applying a veneer is possible, but only with special film and careful preparation. Staining is generally not suitable because the material is not solid wood.

That is exactly the crucial point. These melamine surfaces are very durable but are not designed to be repainted or stained. If you still want to repaint them, I recommend using a high-quality primer before applying paint and sanding very finely (at least 320 grit). An alternative is covering with vinyl film, which, as lenren says, works well but requires very careful preparation.

Stain is actually unsuitable because BRIMNES usually uses chipboard or MDF with a coating that does not show the natural wood grain and absorbs strongly.

Hello! I’d like to revisit how the surfaces of BRIMNES furniture can be altered. The furniture is indeed coated with a durable melamine or plastic layer that is quite scratch-resistant. This makes repainting more challenging but not impossible.

If you plan to change the color of the furniture, the most important step is to lightly sand the surface with very fine sandpaper. The goal is to break through the existing paint or sealant so that the new paint or finish can adhere properly. Afterward, you should use a primer specifically designed for smooth or melamine-coated surfaces.

Besides painting, applying vinyl wrap or adhesive films is a good alternative, especially if you want to avoid extensive work and the furniture surfaces aren’t exposed to heavy wear.

Staining is practically out of the question. The MDF or chipboard core inside is non-porous and lacks wood grain, so it does not absorb stain, resulting in an uneven and unattractive finish.

Summary:
- Sand the surface (fine, thorough)
- Use a special primer
- Painting or wrapping as options
- Staining not recommended

Good luck with your project!
