Is there a specific care product for the surfaces of the IKEA Brimnes furniture series?
I plan to maintain my new Brimnes cabinets over the long term and would like to use a product that does not damage or discolor the surface.
The surfaces are made of coated MDF panels, but I have not found clear information on whether their care differs from that of traditional wood or laminate furniture.
I would like to know if IKEA itself or anyone in the community can recommend a specific product that is best suited for cleaning and protecting Brimnes surfaces without causing damage.
Perhaps there are also care tips on what should definitely not be used on Brimnes. Thanks in advance.

Important: no waxes or oils, they usually attract dust or can cause stains.Thank you, that’s interesting.
I have also considered that many oils or waxes are not ideal for melamine surfaces.
How do you handle maintenance then if you don’t use waxes or oils? Just cleaning with mild products and occasionally furniture cream?

No waxes or oils, they usually attract dust or can cause stains. I can confirm that. The melamine coating is pore-free, so it does not absorb nutrients or oils like wood does. A heavy wax film only changes the feel and tends to look slightly blotchy.
Most manufacturers of stains and wax polishes therefore recommend only lightly oil-free care products for melamine.
In practice, a two-step method is advisable:
- Regular cleaning with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner
- Occasional use of special plastic care products (available at furniture or DIY stores), which have antistatic effects and slightly smooth the surface
If you want a matte look, you should avoid highly glossy polishes, as these will make the typical coating shiny.
How often do you plan to clean and maintain the furniture?

For maintenance, meaning applying a protective layer, probably every few months, maybe quarterly if needed.
Are there specific brands or ingredients in these plastic care products that I should look out for? Preferably something without harsh solvents.
I had similar considerations regarding Brimnes. Plastic care products containing polydimethylsiloxanes (silicone oils) are often effective but not recommended for all surfaces.
Make sure the product is specifically suitable for melamine or plastic coatings.
These products maintain and protect the surface, making it water-repellent and antistatic, but they do not create a glossy finish.
Always test the product first on a hidden spot!

Let's be honest, do you really need a specialty product for IKEA Brimnes?
The surface is inexpensive and durable, and regular cleaning is usually more than enough.
Anyone praising expensive specialty wax is simply overestimating the type of material.
My suggestion: Less obsession with maintenance, more practical cleanliness. It’s quicker and lasts longer.

Honestly, do you really need a special product for IKEA Brimnes? That’s a valid point.
I specifically want something that complements regular cleaning and helps keep the surface looking as good as new for as long as possible.
IKEA furniture can certainly wear out quickly with everyday use, but I don’t want worn surfaces after just one year.
That’s why I’m interested in the best care methods, even if they are simple.
