Hello everyone, I am currently considering customizing my Ikea Pax wardrobe – specifically, I am interested in the doors. My question is: Is it possible to modify the Ikea Pax doors by painting them yourself, or alternatively applying a vinyl wrap, without compromising their quality or functionality?

I am interested in both the technical feasibility and the potential advantages and disadvantages of these two options. Are there any special considerations regarding the doors (material, surface texture, possible surface coatings) that could make painting or wrapping more difficult?

I would appreciate any experiences, tips on products or application methods – as well as advice on whether it’s better to do it yourself or to consult a professional. Thanks in advance!

Hello jorg64, I’m quite familiar with Ikea Pax doors, as I have worked on several myself. These doors usually come with a melamine or vinyl coating, which can be challenging. For painting, the first step is thorough sanding to roughen the surface, otherwise the new paint won’t adhere properly. Spray painting or multiple coats with a special primer are recommended.

For wrapping, I would suggest using a professional-grade vinyl, since the doors are often either too smooth or have pressed edges that make wrapping difficult—air bubbles and uneven edges are common issues. It’s important that the doors are very clean, free of grease and dust, otherwise the vinyl will not stick well.

Another potential difficulty is that the door material can vary (MDF or particleboard with a coating), which affects how well paints or vinyl adhere. It’s worth testing on an inconspicuous area first.

Are you aiming for a matte or glossy finish? If you want, I can provide detailed instructions on sanding, priming, and painting in case you decide to do it yourself.

Hey jorg64, definitely, you can personalize the doors yourself! Painting works great – but don’t rush the sanding, since the surface is quite smooth. A useful tip: instead of expensive spray paint, you can use high-quality acrylic paint from a hardware store if you apply several thin coats.

Vinyl wrapping is also a nice alternative, especially if you want quick results or like changing styles often. A small tip: get a film with air channels, which makes it much easier to smooth out bubbles.

And one more thing – don’t get overwhelmed by professional standards. With a bit of patience, anyone can do this themselves. For the best look, be sure to carefully treat edges and corners.

Have fun with your project, it’ll definitely look great!

Exactly, nothing will hold without sanding.

I can confirm that. Films without air channels are pure torture to work with.

Overall, you can do either, but painting takes more time and experience.
