Good morning everyone, I am currently looking into whether there are any Ikea Pax wardrobes specifically designed for use in damp rooms. More precisely, I want to know if there are Pax models whose materials or surfaces have been specially treated to better resist moisture and related issues such as warping or mold growth.

For me, it is especially important to find out whether the carcasses, doors, or interiors have any kind of damp room certification, or if it is generally recommended to use the Pax wardrobe only in dry areas.

Does anyone have experience with this or know of product features that clearly indicate suitability for damp environments? Thanks in advance for your opinions and tips!

Hey, that’s a very good and important question! To be honest, as far as I know, Pax wardrobes are not specifically designed as furniture for damp environments. Most Ikea furniture is made from particleboard or MDF with a melamine or foil coating – this can handle brief exposure to moisture, but it’s not meant for constant damp conditions.

You can look at it this way: a Pax wardrobe in bathrooms with high humidity is likely to deteriorate faster, especially if water frequently comes into contact with its surface.

So I would recommend, if you really want a Pax in your bathroom, to ensure good ventilation and possibly apply extra coating or sealing. But I am not aware of any “official” damp-room models. 😊

Short answer: No, Ikea does not offer Pax wardrobes with a special moisture-resistant version.

For damp areas, furniture made of metal, plastic, or specially treated waterproof wood is usually recommended.

In addition to the previous answers: Ikea Pax is primarily designed for use in living spaces, meaning relatively dry environments. The materials—wood-based panels with surface veneers—are neither waterproof nor moisture-resistant.

If you still want to use Pax in a bathroom or another damp area, please consider the following:
- Well-ventilated room is essential
- Avoid direct water contact
- Possibly apply additional sealing treatments

Alternatively, you could try to find elements with water-resistant paint or coating, but this is not intended for Pax as offered in the product range.

My recommendation: it is better to choose furniture explicitly designed for damp areas to avoid long-term damage.

Exactly. The carcasses are mostly made of particleboard with laminate or paint, which acts like a protective shield for wiping down, but it does not guarantee resistance against moisture damage.

There is some hope in the fact that the doors are partly made of wood or glass, which can be dried off, but the interiors are definitely not designed for high humidity environments.

Using waterproof boxes or containers inside might help – but of course, that is only a partial solution. It remains a mystery why Ikea does not offer a moisture-resistant version, which could actually be in high demand.

I once had a Pax wardrobe in the bathroom (not ideal, I know) and can say from personal experience: it works, as long as there is good ventilation and no water comes into direct contact with the wardrobe.

However, after 2-3 years, the edges showed slight swelling.

I’m not aware of a moisture-resistant model with a special design from Ikea, which probably means: it’s best to avoid it or look for a good alternative if moisture is going to be a constant factor.
