Hello everyone, I am currently planning my kitchen using Ikea Metod cabinets and have a question that’s causing me some uncertainty: Is it really possible to install Ikea Metod cabinets completely without drilling?

I understand that most installations involve fixing the cabinets to the wall to ensure stability. However, I would like to know if there are viable and safe solutions that would make drilling into the wall entirely unnecessary—whether through special clamping or snap-in systems, other brackets, or possibly alternative methods.

I’m also interested in how stability and safety can be guaranteed with a drill-free installation, especially for taller or fully loaded cabinets.

Has anyone had experience with this or knows of practical alternatives that are permanently reliable? Thank you in advance!

Installing Ikea Metod cabinets without drilling is generally not recommended.

The cabinets are heavy and must be securely fastened to the wall to prevent tipping hazards.

Clamp or snap-in solutions are not designed to support the weight and requirements.

The desire to install Ikea Metod cabinets without drilling is understandable, especially if you want to avoid damaging walls or if you live in a rental property where drill holes are not allowed. However, a more detailed consideration is necessary.

First of all, Metod cabinets are designed to be securely attached to the wall using the supplied mounting hardware. This attachment prevents tipping or falling hazards, which can cause not only property damage but also personal injury.

There are alternatives to drilling, such as adhesive systems or tension rods that clamp between the ceiling and floor—relevant adapters are available from suppliers, and DIY solutions are often discussed. However, these do not have official certification for the required load capacities.

Additionally, factors like wall material, ceiling height, cabinet size, and load capacity play an important role. For large or heavy cabinets, drill-free solutions are almost always a safety risk.

If your goal is to avoid causing any damage to a rental property, you might consider planning freestanding cabinets or choosing a module with adjustable feet. However, stability checks should definitely be performed in these cases.

What type of wall do you have (concrete, drywall/plasterboard, tiles)? And how heavily will the cabinets be loaded? These factors significantly influence the choice of mounting method.

This is an important point. Ikea Metod cabinets are designed for wall mounting using wall anchors. Without this type of fastening, the risk of accidents increases significantly.

There are mounting systems that rely only on clamping or adhesive, but these are generally only suitable for light loads and are not approved for kitchen cabinets. For those concerned about safety, it is essential to follow Ikea’s installation instructions and use drilling.

If drilling is absolutely not an option, a freestanding solution with sturdy base frames and cross braces might be a viable alternative. Professional advice from kitchen fitters can also help in finding safe alternatives.

In general: without wall mounting, a permanent and load-bearing installation of Metod cabinets is not realistic.
