Hello everyone,
I am considering repurposing the Ikea PAX wardrobe as a bookcase. My question is: Can the PAX wardrobe be used effectively and practically as a bookcase, especially regarding the load-bearing capacity of the shelves, the depth of the compartments, and overall stability? I have seen several shelving units specifically designed for books, but the PAX is modular and caught my attention because of its design and size. However, I am unsure whether the PAX shelves can support the weight of heavy books and how well the wardrobe can be adapted for use as a bookcase. Does anyone have experience with this or can offer specific advice on what to consider when using the PAX as a bookcase? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Great idea to use the PAX as a bookcase!I agree. Just give it a try, and if necessary, add extra reinforcements. It should work fine.
I would also repurpose the PAX! Precisely because it is so versatile, it becomes a cool bookshelf with a custom layout. My tip: Try testing it with a few books, spread across different shelves, and then see how stable the whole thing feels.
The PAX didn’t disappoint me either, especially when combined with storage boxes and lighting elements—it looks really stylish and cozy. A few smaller tips:
- Distribute the weight evenly
- Make sure to secure it to the wall
- See if you can reinforce some of the shelves—this can be done with some DIY work using metal brackets or similar
Have fun setting it up!

The additional advice regarding reinforcement and proper load distribution will be very useful to me. I will probably plan a combination of shelves in standard thickness and possibly some thicker panels to ensure sufficient load-bearing capacity. I will get back to you once I have assembled the cabinet and gathered some initial experience.
