Hello everyone,

I am planning to build an IKEA METOD kitchen island myself, with plenty of storage and an integrated seating area, and I would like to gather your experiences and recommendations.

My goal is to create as much storage as possible without the island appearing too bulky. The seating should be comfortable while not taking up too much space. I have considered fitting the second row of base cabinets with tall drawers and adding a counter bar in front for stools.

I am particularly interested in how you ensure stability in such constructions, which worktops are suitable to make the seating surface functional and durable, and how to best plan the necessary depth of the base cabinets when including seating areas.

Additionally, I would appreciate any tips on assembly or useful accessories, such as hinges or stool heights that fit well with the island.

I look forward to your inputs!

An island without built-in connections for water or electricity is significantly easier to install.

The weight mainly depends on the countertop and its load. A 28mm (1¼ inch) HPL or solid wood countertop combined with standard METOD base cabinets easily supports typical kitchen items.

Make sure to attach the countertop to the cabinet frames at several points to prevent sagging under load.

An additional cross-bracing structure beneath the countertop improves stability, especially if it is often used as seating. Standard support strips alone are usually sufficient for normal loads, but extra reinforcement is recommended for seating areas.

That sounds like a really great project!

Tip: Adjustable-height stools are perfect for seating – this way, you can easily match the seat height to your counter.

And if you like a bit of flair, you can also spruce up the fronts with adhesive vinyl – it makes the island a real eye-catcher and is easy to do.

Have fun, and remember: Build your island so it not only provides storage but also invites you to linger 😉

I can easily relate to how important proper planning is for you. At first, I had many doubts whether the IKEA METOD modules would really be as stable as promised when combined. What helped me was assembling the island with additional glued and screwed joints, also invisible from the inside.

Also: For the seating area, I chose a slightly thicker worktop with a great surface that’s easy to clean, since I often handle drinks and food there. I selected the depth so that the seat and legroom fit well – about 60 cm (24 inches) seating depth worked best for me.

It gave me confidence to check everything again with temporary elements and a spirit level before final assembly. This way, you can compensate for any unevenness.

The standard depth of METOD cabinets is 60 cm (24 inches), but for seating areas, I would recommend having the countertop or overhang extend slightly forward to provide more legroom.

Countertops should be at least 28 mm (1 inch) thick, made of solid wood or HPL, and securely fastened.

Soft-close hinges are definitely the better option, as they are more durable and quieter.
