I am currently working on building modern and functional kitchen furniture based on the Ikea Metod cabinets and am particularly interested in integrating handle grooves. My main question is how to design Metod cabinets with handle grooves so that they not only look modern and clean but also remain especially functional in daily use, especially regarding ergonomics and durability.
I have already researched that handle grooves can be a minimalist and elegant solution, but at the same time, I wonder: What is the best way to install handle grooves on standard Metod doors? Are there any professional tips or accessories that ensure a neat and long-lasting result? Additionally, I am interested in which types of handle grooves currently work best with the Metod system – for example, recessed aluminum profiles versus routed handle grooves.
I would really appreciate any experiences, recommendations for useful tools and materials, as well as tips on any potential pitfalls to watch out for during implementation. Thank you in advance!

How is the best way to install recessed handles on standard Metod doors? Are there any professional tips or accessories that ensure a clean and durable solution?Hello Herbert70,
I’m happy to help you with this. Installing recessed handles on Metod doors usually requires precise preparation—especially careful measuring and marking of the routings is essential. Many use a template to ensure even spacing and clean edges.
Regarding accessories: there are aluminum profiles specifically designed for recessed handles that you can glue and screw in. This has the advantage of keeping the edges abrasion-resistant and prevents the material from chipping. Alternatively, the recessed handles can be routed directly into the wood or MDF of the doors, which looks very high-quality but demands more craftsmanship, good tools—such as a router with a template—and experience.
When it comes to durability, the rule of thumb is: the more precise and smooth the edges, the longer the surface will remain intact. If you have little DIY experience, I recommend using aluminum or plastic profiles to protect the recess edges.
Something often overlooked: the recessed handles should be positioned ergonomically so the hand can comfortably grip and pull, meaning a depth of at least 10 mm (0.4 inches) and enough space for the fingers.
If you like, I can also give you tips on the best tools to use. Best regards!

I’m also interested in which types of recessed handles currently work best with the Metod system – for example, built-in aluminum profiles versus routed recessed handles. Both options have their pros and cons. Built-in aluminum profiles offer a modern look, protect the edges well, and are easier and faster to install. The material is durable and long-lasting. They provide a clearly defined grip and look very high-quality.
Routed recessed handles have a more subtle appearance and create a seamless look, but they require much more precise workmanship. A stable router and a template are essential; otherwise, uneven edges can occur, which may affect the feel and wear out faster.
For functionality, it’s also important to position the recessed handle to optimize the movement – usually along the right or left edge of the door, depending on the opening direction.
In practice, I recommend the built-in aluminum profile for a good balance between design and function without the need for extensive routing.

- Use an appropriate template for marking the recessed handle to avoid measurement errors and ensure consistent results.
- Before routing, carefully check the depth and the router bit to prevent overcuts.
- If you are working with routed recesses, I recommend using a 90° edge router bit with guide bearings and working on MDF doors, as they route better and cleaner than solid wood doors.
- For embedded aluminum profiles, ensure precise bonding with a suitable assembly adhesive and use screws only if specified.
- Ergonomic checking of the recessed handles before planning is important. Tip: Make a fist and hold it over the planned position to check if there is enough gripping space.
The recessed handles should also be thoroughly tested for durability to avoid everyday issues such as chipping or paint damage on the top edges.
In summary: The combination of careful planning, precise tools, and high-quality materials makes the difference in modern design and functionality. This way, your Metod cabinets with recessed handles will neither compromise in appearance nor in performance.
