Hello everyone,

I plan to mount an IKEA BILLY bookcase on the wall and am currently facing the challenge of choosing the right screws and wall anchors. Since the method of fixing varies depending on the wall material, I would like to know: What screw and anchor sizes are ideal for the BILLY bookcase, especially when mounting it on concrete, plaster, or drywall (e.g., gypsum board) walls?

It would also be helpful to get an assessment of the load capacity to ensure the bookcase is securely fixed to the wall and won’t be damaged due to insufficient fastening. Does anyone have specific recommendations or experience? Thanks in advance!

Usually, two wall plugs are used per shelf, one in each upper corner. If the shelf is heavily loaded, a third wall plug in the center can help to better distribute the weight.

I have always used three wall plugs for an 80cm (31.5 inches) BILLY shelf: two at the top outside edges and one centrally between them. This provides secure support even under heavier loads and prevents tilting.

Two anchors are sufficient for light loads, but for heavier weights, add a third anchor at the top center. This keeps the shelf stable and prevents excessive stress on the wall.

In summary:

- For wall mounting with a mandatory weight of 30 kg (66 lbs) or more, use at least three anchors.
- Position them in the two upper corners plus centrally above.
- Use screws at least 6x60 mm (1/4 x 2 1/4 inches) for metal hollow wall anchors / concrete.
- Concrete: 6 mm (1/4 inch) anchors, drywall: 8 mm (5/16 inch) metal hollow wall anchors.

This approach ensures a stable, long-lasting mounting.

I believe the combination of anchor size, screw length, and quantity is crucial. 🙂 One tip at the end: If you don’t tighten the screws too much, the anchor can still give slightly without pulling out – finding the ideal balance makes all the difference.
