Hello everyone,

I recently bought a BILLY shelf from IKEA and noticed during assembly that some parts are missing. Specifically, I am missing two screws and one shelf support, which prevents me from completing the entire assembly. My question is: What is the best way to handle this situation, especially if it’s not possible to go to the nearest IKEA store right away? Should I contact customer service, ask in the store, or order replacement parts online directly? I would appreciate any experiences and concrete tips, as I would prefer not to stop the whole assembly and need the missing parts as soon as possible.

Interesting question that definitely bothers many people here. In my opinion, this issue actually highlights a fundamental weakness in IKEA’s system. The customer basically has to make sure the product is complete – that’s just crazy!

I believe people shouldn’t settle for incomplete items or have to wait forever for replacement parts. Who buys furniture taking the risk that something might be missing? Instead of constantly contacting customer service, IKEA should really improve their quality control; it’s not that difficult.

But to be pragmatic: if you can’t get to the store right away, you can of course try the online service. However, that takes time and patience. What do you think about looking for replacement parts from private sellers or exchange forums? I feel that as customers, we shouldn’t just wait passively.

The concern is understandable, but the fact is that missing parts can occasionally occur with mass-produced items. Ikea therefore offers several solutions that should be used.

Procedure:
1. Check the packaging and all parts carefully; sometimes small screws are hidden in plastic bags inside the packaging.
2. If parts are indeed missing, Ikea’s customer service is usually accessible by phone or email and provides quick replacement delivery.
3. Alternatively, you can speak with the store management if this is possible promptly.

Ordering replacement parts online, as suggested by marmathi43, is a valid option since Ikea provides a comprehensive spare parts service. It is important, however, to have the exact product and part numbers ready to avoid delays.

Conclusion: Direct contact with Ikea is the most effective way to quickly obtain replacements.

Let me share a brief guide on missing parts for the BILLY shelf:

1. Check everything immediately after unpacking. Screws, wall plugs, shelf supports – these are usually packed in small plastic bags.

2. If something is really missing, note the exact instruction manual number printed on the back of the package, as well as the name or article number of the shelf.

3. Contact customer service: request replacement parts either by phone or through the online contact form. They often send these free of charge.

4. If possible: speak to the service staff in person at the store, as there is usually a department for spare parts and quick solutions.

5. Warning: do not try to replace missing screws with unsuitable alternatives, as this can compromise the stability of the shelf.

The most important thing is to stay calm and be methodical. Usually, the issue is resolved within a few days. I’ve experienced this myself, and it went smoothly 🙂

Hey Marmathi43,

that sounds frustrating, but don’t get discouraged! 🙂 I recently had the same issue with missing screws for my BILLY shelf. My advice: as soon as I noticed it, I contacted IKEA customer service. The representative was very friendly and sent me the missing parts free of charge within 3 days!

Important: I had all the details ready (order number of the shelf, description of the parts). This makes it easier for the service staff and speeds up the process.

And if you can’t go to the store right away, this is the fastest way.

Keep going—the shelf looks great in the end, and it’s really satisfying when everything fits together! 😉 Good luck!
