Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and now I’m facing the problem that the instructions in German are not really clear to me. In particular, the way the connections and the assembly of individual components are shown in the printed guide seems very unclear and even partly contradictory. I’m wondering if anyone here knows of alternative sources or clearer instructions in German that explain the assembly better?

It would be helpful if the source included step-by-step instructions or even videos. I’m also interested in any general tips for dealing with these somewhat confusing instructions. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello Rebasan,

I am familiar with the issues related to the BILLY assembly instructions. In my experience, the official IKEA manuals tend to be very minimalistic – they are primarily designed for quick assembly but lack detailed explanations, which can be especially confusing regarding the connection methods for shelves and inserts.

As alternatives, I recommend the following approach:

1. YouTube channels: There are various assembly videos specifically for BILLY shelves. These videos often show every step in detail with commentary, which helps to clear up misunderstandings. Try searching for "BILLY shelf assembly instructions German."

2. IKEA blogs and forums: IKEA runs a customer forum where many users share their experiences and tips for assembly.

3. General DIY websites: Sites like "heimwerker.de" or "selbermachen.de" sometimes offer more detailed written and visual guides that go beyond the IKEA manuals.

One more tip: make sure to sort all parts and check them against the parts list before starting assembly. Most errors occur due to missing parts or unrecognized orientation differences.

If you want, you can also describe exactly which step or screw you are having trouble with, and I can assist you specifically.

Absolutely right! Videos are invaluable, especially when the written instructions are a bit too complicated.

Last year, I assembled a BILLY myself and came across a German YouTuber who shows every single step in detail and even admits to his small mistakes during the build – that makes it much more relatable and realistic 🙂

Just try searching on YouTube for “IKEA BILLY shelf complete assembly” or something similar; it quickly clears things up and reduces frustration. You can also adjust the playback speed if it’s shown too fast.

Good luck with your assembly! And don’t forget: Always approach it with a positive attitude – that’s how it will turn out well in the end 😉

Hello Rebasan,

to make your search more targeted, I recommend downloading the PDF version of the IKEA instructions in addition to the official printed guide. The PDF is often more detailed than the printout included with the packages.

Furthermore, the IKEA website often features a FAQ section for the BILLY shelving unit and sometimes additional assembly handouts that can be downloaded without registration.

Note:
It is important to always check the part numbers against the diagrams, as the German version sometimes has inaccurate labels or incorrect illustrations.

If you find any part of the instructions unclear, you can also raise it directly in the IKEA customer forum. This way, you can often find helpful solutions with little effort.

In particular, I have noticed that adjusting the shelf height with the included dowels and screws often causes confusion; it helps to do a dry assembly of individual shelves beforehand.

This is a common criticism. As a general recommendation for better understanding, it helps to lay out the assembly instructions alongside the actual positioning of the parts instead of relying solely on the drawings.

Additionally, the IKEA website sometimes provides the instructions as videos or through the “IKEA Place” app, which shows interactively how the parts fit together. This can help reduce confusion about the connections.

In conclusion: If you have some DIY experience, it can also be beneficial to assemble the steps in your preferred order, as long as the structural integrity is not compromised. This means, for example, tightening some screws later to allow more flexibility for adjustments.

Brief and clear: Use YouTube tutorials and the IKEA website PDF instructions.

The BILLY shelf is basically straightforward – sort all the parts, follow the instructions while assembling, and if anything is unclear, watch the video guides.

This saves a lot of frustration.
