Hello everyone,
I have a Billy shelf unit from IKEA, and recently the doors keep falling off their mounts. Specifically, the hinges come loose from the shelf frame, or the doors hang crooked, so they don’t close properly or even slip completely out of the hinges. This happens especially under heavier load or when the door is opened. Does anyone know the cause of this problem? How can the BILLY shelf be adjusted or repaired so that the doors stay firmly in place and maintain the correct position over time? I would appreciate concrete tips—preferably step-by-step instructions for adjusting the hinges, replacing parts, or advice on whether material fatigue might be the cause. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses!
To clarify a bit more: The hinges are cup hinges, with three adjustment screws as vinli described. The holes in the side panel don’t appear to be worn out, at least visually, but the fastening of the dowels feels somewhat loose when turning the door back and forth.
My main issue is that the doors occasionally slip partially out of the mounting, so they don’t just hang crooked. Mesila, is this already a sign that the hinges themselves are damaged, or is it more likely due to the dowels?
If I need to replace the hinges or dowels, how would I go about it? Do I need special replacement parts, or just the original IKEA components? Thanks!

My main issue is that the doors sometimes come partly completely off their hingesThis usually indicates problems with the holding strength of the hinges or the wall plugs (also called anchors).
Tutorial for checking and replacement:
1. Remove the door: carefully lift the door upwards.
2. Unscrew the hinges from the cabinet frame. Check if the metal parts or plastic holders show any cracks or breaks.
3. Remove the wall plugs from the side panel, if necessary pull them out with pliers.
4. Check the fit of the old wall plugs. If they are soft or broken, definitely replace them.
Replacement parts: It is best to use original IKEA hinges and wall plugs, as these are designed precisely for the BILLY system and ensure proper mechanical function.
After replacement, fix all parts with wood glue or anchor adhesive to prevent future loosening.
Finally, realign the doors completely and adjust screws on three axes.
One more tip: Screws should be tightened firmly but not over-tightened, as the plastic parts can crack quickly.
I hope this helps you!
Just briefly: If the doors fall out, it often helps to attach small rubber bumpers on the inside corners so that the doors are better supported at the endpoints and are less likely to slip out of their fittings.
This can be easily done yourself and is a quick, practical solution.

How would I replace hinges or dowels if needed? Do I need special spare parts or just the original IKEA parts? It’s best to always use original IKEA parts. They fit perfectly.
To replace hinges: loosen the screws and attach the new hinge.
To replace dowels: pull out the old dowel, insert a new dowel with some wood glue, and let it dry briefly.
This will ensure the connections are firmly secured again.
