Hello everyone, I want to install a Billy shelf in my basement, but I have the problem that the humidity there is quite high, especially during the cold season. Of course, I want the shelf to be stable and to remain undamaged in the long term. Has anyone had experience installing Billy shelves or similar furniture under such conditions? How can I carry out the installation so that the moisture affects the shelf as little as possible? Are there special materials or tricks to protect the wood or maintain stability? I would appreciate detailed tips since I mainly want to use the shelf for storing books without moisture damage. Thanks in advance!
At the relative humidity of 65-70% you mentioned, there is an inherent risk of wood swelling, especially with chipboard materials like those used in the Billy shelf. Typical MDF or chipboard panels are very sensitive to moisture.
If a technical solution, such as a dehumidifier, is initially not an option, I recommend the following measures:
- Install only on spacers to avoid direct floor contact.
- Consider an additional protective layer, for example a water-repellent coating on all relevant surfaces, including edges.
- Preferably avoid completely sealing the material; instead, use a breathable coating to minimize condensation.
- Regular inspections and ventilation when weather conditions are dry, if possible.
Completely avoiding wooden shelves is, however, the most sustainable solution material-wise in cases of consistently high humidity.

Rashadmeo18 Feb 2020 07:22I completely understand! I had the same problem with my basement. But I upgraded the Billy shelf with silicone feet that prevent water from reaching the wood. I also treated the shelves with a special marine varnish! 🙂 Since then, no more damage.
You can do it, I believe in you! The first time takes a bit of effort, but then it lasts for a very long time!

I treated the shelves with a special marine varnish! Marine varnish is really effective against moisture – simple and efficient. This way, you can protect wooden furniture well in a damp basement.
Finally, a tip for installation: Screws anchored into masonry in damp basements can rust over time. Use stainless steel screws or plastic anchors.
Additionally, installing a ventilation grille or a small climate control unit can greatly help with airflow and moisture management.
Summary:
- Keep a distance from the floor
- Treat shelves with water-resistant varnish
- Consider ventilation and moisture control
- Use screws and anchors made of suitable materials
This way, you can best protect your Billy shelf.
